A seven-wicket win at the Grannies, in verse
Brad Abraham took three, debutant Elsie Duncan claimed a wicket and a catch, and LNZ chased 86 for a seven-wicket win before heading to The Griffin.
Saturday the 4th of July, the day dawned bright,
Were the Grannies prepared for LNZ's might?
South into the depths of Sussex did indeed we go,
With Elsie Duncan, a debutant, happily in tow.
Out to the middle we wandered (pretending to know what to look for),
It was decided we'd have a bowl and restrict the oppo to a score.
Vancer and Jonny Brewis were skipper Khanbai's opening picks with the ball,
Though heated discussions on field sets nearly saw us heading for a fall...
Nevertheless, onwards we went,
With a depleted opposition, they weren't far from spent.
Early breakthroughs were made, and catches were held,
Any hopes of a seismic total were more than quelled.
Wickets were shared around, with a couple for Bridget Donkin and Mr Thompson himself,
While Will Eddowes claimed one to ensure he wasn't left on the shelf.
Special mention to our POM, Brad Abraham, who somehow managed to bag three,
With one of the more ropey spells of bowling you ever did see!
Big congrats to Elsie - her first wicket and catch secured for the club,
We already had something to celebrate as we headed off to the pub.
Eighty-six was the total to chase,
As John McMullan and John Shea set off at a steady pace.
Some lusty blows, as always, from Vaughan and Jacob Vanner,
Meant a seven-wicket win for the Kiwis, raising the winning banner.
A huge thanks to The Grannies for their customary goodwill and fare,
And to Nick Ratcliffe for hosting us with such flair.
A lovely time in the sun was had post-match,
As an abundance of beers - and naturally some rosé - went down the hatch.
It was camaraderie and friendship at their finest,
As we headed to The Griffin, which, as watering holes go, truly is the divinest.
This match report may have lacked the cricket content you were after,
But at the very least, I hope it gave you some laughter.
I assure you there was no assistance from ChatGPT,
And to doubt me on that would be an insult to my creativity!
Should you have made it this far, I thank you for your time,
And sincerely apologise for the occasional questionable rhyme.
