Roger Blunt Award for Services to the Club
Roger Blunt was LNZCC’s first Club Captain and the award for ‘Services to the Club’ is named for him. Born in England in 1900, his family emigrated to Christchurch when he was a baby and he attended Christ’s College. Blunt was an all-rounder, taking 5 wickets and scoring 50 in NZ’s first-ever test match against England. He played 123 first-class matches for Otago, and 9 tests for New Zealand. In fact, his 9 tests were NZ’s first 9 tests. Blunt’s best first-class score is still one of the highest ever scored in a match in New Zealand – 338* for Otago vs Canterbury in 1932. It stood for 15 years as the only triple-century by a New Zealander until Bert Sutcliffe made it on to the honours board. Blunt was a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1927.
Each year LNZCC's Committee awards the Blunt Trophy to the club member who has contributed at an especially noteworthy level off the field of play. |
