Wanderers - Sunday 3rd July 2011
On a glorious July
morning LNZ were set for the annual fixture against the Wanderer’s. The morning was
welcomed by the news that Roycey had pulled his lower sphinxy muscle whilst
reaching for the sky remote so we were down to 10 players. A few phone calls
later we had a new player in ‘Bob’ join the ranks. The dressing room was
looking a little thin with 3 players but on start time the Plimmer Toyota Hi Ace
van turned up and out bundled another 5 players & Marty. Fanning and
Weston-Simons went out to toss, Weston-Simons tossed the coin into the air and
when it landed Fanning looked down to see how it had landed only to hear
Weston-Simons utter “It is usual custom to call when the coin is in the air.”
Fanning duly lost the re-toss and we were put into the field. The new ball was
tossed to Simm and Hamilton who both did a fine job in testing conditions.
Wanderer’s cracked onto 100 without loss when Simm finally got a break through
with a well taken catch behind the stumps by Plimmer. This brought to the wicket
S Ahmed who had been rumoured to have played for Pakistan A, which was later to
be recounted that this myth had stemmed from someone overhearing one of the
Kiwis asking “You played in Pakistan, eh?” which was duly translated by a local
to he played in Pakistan A. Ahmed preceded to pound the bowling though giving a
couple of chances off Dick and Penman went onto crack a 120 and then retired. Blackie on his Harold
Nottman cap match for the club bowled his waifs and had the opposition in
disarray and promptly had the bails flying for a well deserved wicket. The
batsman was fooled with the ball bouncing twice. The two left arm
bowlers of Dick and Holden added some variation to the bowling attack and were
unfortunate not to get wickets. As always TP pounded in and gave it his all for
9 overs on the trot in very hot conditions. At the end of the
allotted 45 overs Wanderer’s scored an impressive 319 for 6. Fanning and Fish
opened the innings for LNZ and did not get the start they wanted with the
skipper holing out early on. Hamilton played some fine shots but the stars of
the batting line-up were James Penman and Guy who both hit good half centuries
and a particular impressive effort by James who had flown in from NZ the day
before. LNZ posted a
respectable 198 against a good bowling attack in our 45 overs, but unfortunately
it was 121 a miss of a winning score. Thanks very much to Marty and Tony for umpiring and Zoe and Gilbert for scoring the match.
