Royal Household - Saturday 3rd September 2011
As ever the detailed
preparations (read ‘antics’) for the LNZ fixture vs Royal Household started well
in advance of the fixture. A few players put their name down for the game before
the fixture list was even printed !! Notwithstanding several changes in the
match manager’s work email address, numbers rapidly increased via fag packet,
verbals, emails, phone calls, SMS and W2W (wife to wife messaging) until I had
20, no 17, no 15, no 18, no 14, no 15 players, with the last offer to play
arriving on the day before the game. After years of
requesting “Can I just add one more person”, the local constabulary have now put
me on a watch list for my lack of respect for the security of the realm. For the
novices out there, it’s a Royal Palace - they need all names, guests, car rego’s
in 2 weeks before so they can do security checks. After winning the toss
and electing to field we marched onto the field with 10 players (Arghhh). Having donated the
services of Jackson ‘Jacko’ Locke and Chris Hamilton to RHCC (thanks guys – they
were very appreciative) we found ourselves borrowing one of their players to
field for the first 20 overs. Chris opened the
batting for the opposition and looked promising until Guy Simm (the bowler of
the day) snaffled his wicket. Jacko performed extremely well – edging and
snicking the bowlers (to be fair they were ‘snicks’ off the middle of the bat
mostly) all over the park until he coughed just short of well-deserved ton. At
the other end, RHCC stalwart/legend/veteran Dean ‘Deano’ Allen-Turner flogged
his way to a well-deserved 110 before being caught at point by Gerard Walsh off
the only aerial chance he offered all day. Once he found the
whereabouts of the ground, fresh-off-the-Boeing LNZCC-debutant and Auckland
Under-18 captain Nate Williamson showed his potential with the ball, beating the
bat on a number of occasions. Sorry to the other bowlers (TP, Doug Speedy, G &
Matt Reinholds) but I suspect Jacko will not accept “it was a batsman’s track”
and will be reminding you of your prowess at the end of season function.
(Editor’s note – eagle-eyed readers will spot the absence of ‘Keyse, R’ from the
bowling figures. Not a batsman’s track indeed…) Well done to Andrew
Dick who kept well all day with very dodgy fingers. At 244 for 5 declared, a
number on the boundary had written off our chances of victory and decided they
were “there for the beer”. This fixture has a
history of LNZ pulling rabbits out of hats and we needed another. Matt Fanning
(our regular flat track bully) batted well for his 43. Reinholds, Barkle & yours
truly all got starts before the lure of the clubhouse bar was too great. With 20
overs to go & requiring 7 an over, the stage was set for a hero.... Scoreboard RHCC 244
