Goodwood - Sunday 14th August 2011
A glorious day greeted an LNZ team bristling with batting talent. Most of the top 9 had made 100s for the club so the prospect of a big score looked a formality.
Matt Fanning and Richard Boon, making an appearance after 12 years, opened the batting. Matt was looking to repeat last years effort with another 100 but it was not to be . A couple of lusty blows but that was all he could manage. Boony looked all class but fell for the trap that had been set for him, trying to hook but only found the well placed deep backward square. Don Hudson was unlucky in his short innings. Sam Harding and Ben Dormer were brutal and the score rate was never slow while they were at the crease. Sam missed a straight slow one, and Ben eventual was undone after a very quick k 50. Doug Speedy and Mario were both out cheaply and suddenly were 7 down and it was not even lunch. TP and Guy held out to take us in to lunch 110 for 7.
Goodwood bowlers had stuck to their task well. They were clearly celebrating as they managed to consumed a bottle of port during thee break. Whether this had the right effect we will never know.
After lunch Guy Simm and TP batted with control and resistant. Slowly but steadily they kept the scoreboard ticking over putting the bad balls away and begin very sound in defence. The 200 came up and also the 100 partnership on of the best I have seen. Guy got to a well deserved 50 but then holed out. TP and Fishy added a few more but resistance was ended on 237, a score that on past experience did not look like enough.
The heroes with the bat were also the early stars with the ball. TP and Guy opened the bowling and both had early success. Dave Marinovich too a sharp catch off Guy at 2nd slip and Don took a good catch off TP. Goodwood were in trouble but not out of the game.
However LNZ kept it tight and all bowlers enjoyed some success. Doug Speedy who was not feeling well still bowled some tight overs and was well reward with his wicket. Mario took a very sharp catch and bowled and then effected a great run out from square leg. Don Hudson made up for his disappointment with the bat with a wicket as well.
Richard Holden as always could not be out of the wickets. One that went straight on for a plumb LBW and a sharp catch by Sam Harding who was excellent behind the stumps all day ended the Goodwood innings. Sam hardly appealed at all, but the catch was of Pete Wilmer, who after 50 odd years playing against LNZ, walked showing great sportsmanship.
Goodwood were out for an unusually low 118. A great team effort by LNZ with all making contribution with bat, bowl and in the field. With some many excellent contributions the GBK vouchers were split 5 ways
Many thanks to Marty and Goodwood's Terry Mayne for umpiring so well all day. Many thanks to Goodwood. Always excellent hosts. The food is always excellent but maybe they overdid it on the port this year.
