Chenies and Latimer - Sunday 15th May 2011

If I didn’t bowl we win...

An overcast day for our first fixture of the 2011 season saw 5 new players turn out for LNZCC – Daniel Hodgson, Chris Hamilton, Phil Gallagher, Matt Miller and Sean Gordon, welcome aboard boys. I had 8 players at 5pm on Friday but thanks to the annual function at NZ House we managed to rustle up a few and we actually had 12 on the day!

I won the toss and put Chenies and Latimer into bat we started off well in the field the first 10 overs going for only 26 runs thanks to some tight bowling by TP and Dougal McLauchlan. TP bowled his 10 overs straight and was finished with 0-38 off 10. Two of the new players Phil and Dan then bowled and looked good, bowling line good line & length - and pace, both finishing with figures of 0-21 off 6 (1 maiden each).

Chenies then started to pick the run rate up and at drinks were 110-0. their opener and captain then went on to get 100 before retiring and we finally got our first wicket in the 33rd over!!! Thanks to Tricky who bowled well and got 2-16 off his 5 overs with both his wickets being lbw’s (not by Marty). We used 9 bowlers (I bowled myself which in hindsight was a costly decision as 16 runs came from the one over) with Richard Holden being the pick of the rest finishing with figures 1-21 off 6. Matty Miller was very energetic in the field and Dicky kept for the entire innings and did a good job behind the stumps. Chenies and Latimer finished with 276-3 off their 50 overs.

We started really impressive with Dougy and Chris Hamilton both reaching 50 on consecutive balls and at drinks we were cruising at 133-0. The openers found out they would get their names in the book for a 150 run partnership and it did the trick and in the 27th over Chris Hamilton was the first one out for 68 when the score was 143. Dougy had to call for a runner later in his innings due to hamstring problems and was finally bowled for a top score of 76. The mid to lower order was unfortunately disappointing with only a couple of shining lights in Matty Miller who scored 27 and Dicky who got 29. In the end we came agonisingly close, needing 56 off the last 10, 38 off 3 and 13 off the final over. So when Dougal cracked a 4 off the 2nd ball of the last over I thought we might get up but unfortunately he was caught in the deep when we were 271 off the second to last ball of the game - only 5 runs short!

Man of the match and winner of the GBK vouchers was Doug Speedy – well done Dougy. It was a game we should’ve won and I blame myself - if I didn’t bowl we win.
