The Wimbledon Club - Sunday 25th April 2010
It seems an age ago that the sun was shining down on us at the foot of Aorangi Hill on Sunday the 25th April. Summer was nice while it lasted.
The build up to the season opener for 2010 was a bit more hectic than previous years due to the fact that no less than 17 players were available to play. As it happened we had the luxury of being able to play 12 players on the day.
The match was due to start at 1:00pm (despite the club book stating 1:30pm); 40 overs; no limit on bowlers and 12 players with 11 to bat.
I won the toss and inserted the opposition - basically because last year batting second they batted out their overs for personal ambition rather than trying to win a limited over game of cricket!! Making their club debuts were Johnny Plimmer and Doug Speedy.
Martin took the new ball, the uphill end and the wind & Walsh had a go at the other end. Both were rather ineffectual & a reminder from the left arm over veteran Thompson at gully that he thought the skipper may be better off into the wind saw a change of bowler at the top end - Thompson immediately hit a line, length and the stumps. They got through to 46 - 2 off 10 overs with martin into the wind. Then the moment of genius - with Holden off the field nursing a pint and a slightly worse for wear finger on his drawing hand - the skipper turned to his 5th choice bowler to take the 12th over - Barkle. He bowled unchanged for 11 overs and basically strangled them into submission - finishing with figures of 3 for 43 off 11 (including a maiden and a chance for a hat trick - thanks largely to a splendid piece of keeping by 1 of the 2 debutants - Plimmer). With Thompson finishing with 2 for 39 off 11 at the other end and some excellent fielding particularly by the youthful looking Speedy we managed to limit them from 83 for 3 off 18 (4.6 over) to 113 for 4 off 30 (and then managed to restrict them to 180 for 6 off 40 overs. This score on a pitch that was hard and taking the leather off the ball seemed 30 short of a competitive score.
Needless to say we made it competitive.
Lead off by Fanning (26) & Dellabarca (17) we got through to 31 with some fairly risk free cricket. Fanning departed soon after the 50 was reached and with Perkinson digging in Speedy (12) the other debutant joined him and looked set for a reasonable stay - it wasn't to be. We contrived to then lose 4 more wickets to be rather shakily placed at 119 for 7. Martin (12) then nurdled and prodded to help put on 44 with the now very well set Shaun Perkinson and when he departed we needed 18 to win which Thompson (2*) and Perkinson (88*) achieved with 5 balls to spare.
The game was won thanks to Shaun Perkinson's very well composed and patient 88 not out and also thanks to some brilliantly controlled slow bowling by Andrew Barkle (and won't we be reminded of that!) and some energetic line and length medium pace from Vancer + I would have to say one of the better fielding displays we have seen by a LNZCC at Wimbledon for many years.
GBK man of the match award to Shaun Perkinson. Thanks Martin Conway for umpiring.
A great start to the season. Sam
