Hurlingham Club - Saturday 11th September 2010
With a some what contrived toss between Martin and Fanning it was agreed that LNZ would take to the field and have a bowl at Hurlingham.
The top was green and overhead conditions favourable to bowling, Simm and Sisam opened the bowling with tight long spells.
There were very few opportunities for the batsmen to hit out and even fewer chances to snare a wicket with the opening pair posting a century partnership off 24 overs, the match was nicely balanced with LNZCC wanting a few wickets and Hurlingham requiring to up the ante.
As per script Doug broke through, snaring the opening bat for 49 with a catch behind to Dick, the other opener watched Marty raising his finger to a Marinkovich LBW appeal and Hurlingham were 105/2. The signs looked pretty ominous for LNZ with Gus Kennedy striking balls all round the park prior to lunch. With a fine lunch devoured and a change in action from Mandeno the stumps were set flying with his first ball post lunch putting LNZ back in the match.
There was some good controlled bowling from Lewis and Barkle, but neither the bat nor ball really dominated in the post lunch session, Kennedy struck a fine century until he was undone by Nelson. Hurlingham called their batsmen in after 56 overs at 268 runs for 8 wickets.
A fine opening stand by Simm and Dellabarca was had, with some Simm piling into the bowling and Dellabarca being a fine foil at the other end, Richard fell with the score on 80 and he had done his job well. Marinkovich was not to be upstaged by Simm and was carting the ball all around the field.
Simm looked set for a certain century and did not look troubled at all by the bowling until a most unfortunate decision went against him as he was adjudged caught behind for a well hit 90.
We were will set to chase down the runs when the final 20 overs started with 110 runs required but Sam Martin had other ideas and proceeded to castle Markonvich, Hughes and Fanning with some fine swing bowling.
Doug continued on the charge for the runs but with good bowling and fielding by Hurlingham LNZ were 58 runs short when their 9th wicket fell, as Dickie had to run home to attend to his unwell wife the game was over with 4 overs left to see out the match.
As always thanks very much to the Hurlingham club for hosting us and providing such a superb location to play cricket in and providing such a fine tea, Marty and Peter did a superb job with umpiring and scoring as always.
A good day was had by all, we put up a good fight and gave the Hurlingham a real game and enjoyed a beer with them post match.
LNZ captain Matt Fanning won the toss and elected to bowl in this declaration match that started at 11.10 and with 20 overs from 5.30pm
