Hurlingham Club - Saturday 12th September 2009
Well it was a lovely autumn day and LNZCC players by and large managed to arrive on time. Hurlingham won the toss and put us into bat on a road with an out field faster than quicksilver.
After Blair Simm fell early we attacked with Perky and Matt getting stuck into George Brooksbank in particular. Matt's frequent charge into the machine gun fire was audacious and brave and he went to lunch 70 not out. Unfortunately he was out shortly after the resumption but Burg continued to attack hitting a quick 41. Other contributors were Perky with 27, Mike Oliver with 20 and Rob Laing 30 playing his first game for the Club in two decades with a compact. We finished with 257-9 declared but in reality it was never really enough on a pitch of this quality and a punishing outfield.
In reply Hurlingham started at pace with runs coming easily. Mike Oliver picked up two early wickets including the dangerous Wessels but we were unable to stop the bleeding. Andjel smashed 116 and Thompson hit an extremely attractively 55. The patient gave up breathing after 33 overs. Best of the bowlers was Vance who picked up 2-54. LNZCC players by and large managed to leave after the final ball had been bowled and we had an enjoyable drink in the bar whilst closely attended by a model who was drinking champagne. According to Vancer he’d seen her picture in a thousand places. All those promises of satisfaction huh.
