Hartley Wintney - Monday 4th May 2009

On a cold and overcast Bank Holiday Monday we decided to put Hartley Wintney into bat on what proved to be a lovely flat batting wicket. Accurate opening spells from Penman and McCashin put a clamp on the HW openers but only with the introduction of the munificent right arm mediums of Bartle did we secure our fist wicket. The batsman will have nightmares for the rest of the season! Phil was soon replaced by 14 year old, Sam Matthews, who produced an excellent 9 overs of left arm spin. Gore initially bowled well from the other end but lost confidence towards the end of his spell and was replaced by McCashin who took a wicket is his second spell. Holden chimed in at the end with one tight over but wickets generally proved difficult to come by and HW finished their 40 overs on 239-3. Gregory scored an excellent hundred.

In response Andy Matthews making his first appearance for LNZCC for many years and Tippen opened. Matthews looked solid until his hamstring disintegrated and from there on we lost wickets on a regular basis until Swann and Penman came together adding 86 for the 5th wicket. Swann, who by and large managed to keep his worst instincts under wraps, played some lovely shots but when on 52, Mr Hyde appeared and an uncharacteristic (or is it characteristic) slog saw has left peg bent back. Swanny was followed by 13 year old Ashley Layer who failed to trouble the scorer and Hamish Penman who flicked his fourth ball of his hip for 4 but was out later in the over chasing a wide one. From there on wickets fell quickly and we were all out in the penultimate over well short of HW total. HW’s kiwi opening bowler, Scott Baldwin, bowled 3 overs of nude spin (he has played one first class game for Central Districts and his father opened the batting for Wanganui with my father in the late 1960s) and Massey bowled well taking 3 for 20

Many thanks to all those who made the effort to play this lovely fixture. I would like to appeal to all members to be available for this game next season. We really MUST turn up with a strong side and give a good account.
