Hampstead - Sunday 11th May 2009
The match against
Hampstead on Sun May 10th was remarkable for a number of reasons, not least of
which was the healthiest crowd of WAGs, children and other supporters seen for
many years enjoying the sunshine and the £2.50 pints in the clubrooms upstairs. Having been told that
the track turned into a bowler’s graveyard later in the day, on winning the toss
we chose to field, much to the disgust of the Manchester supporters wanting to
watch the early Premiership derby. Hampstead opened with Brandon Buckley, their
notably-talented South African pro facing up to club old boy, Kerry Pinkham and
TP. Within about 2 balls,
Brandon (we got to know him pretty well so I think first name terms is OK) was
looking rather comfortable. Kerry bowled a nice tight couple of overs including
a deserved LBW decision in the 3rd over to leave them 1-12. TP was looking the
same although a bit of Brandon punishment went his way in the second over, then
the first of a couple of torn muscles (Richard Dellabarca popped one in the
field later) took TP off after 3 balls of his 3rd over. I closed off the 3
remaining deliveries then stayed on as Brandon blasted 13 off my third,
including an absolutely enormous 6 onto the northern tennis court. He began to compile a
one-man show of incredible proportions. It’s not really fair to describe
Brandon’s innings as chance-y although there were at least three shots that
roared back past bowlers at catchable height. He raced past 50 while his partner
was on 3 runs, was (very unfortunately) grassed while on 54 and then didn’t
really give another chance until he retired. In very rapid order, Brandon
blasted past his century and his 150. I looked at the scoreboard when he was on
170 – his batting partner who joined him when the score was 8 made it to 18. It was grim stuff for
the bowlers. Kerry apart, we all got blasted. Phil Bartle, Matt Reinholds,
Graeme Diedrichs and I rotated a bit but to very little avail. Each tight over
was followed by a run-fest. He smashed a lot of huge 6’s onto the tennis courts
on both sides and the houses at either end. With TP off, I resorted to bowling
youngster Cameron Edwards from Hampstead who actually got the ball to turn and
took a wicket. Graeme D did generate a lot of turn – he’s changed gear from
medium pace to tweaking. Anyway, Brandon raced
paced 200, and much to our horror, he then accelerated. I had visions of 300 but
he retired on 223 which must be the highest individual total against LNZCC? He
was ably supported by some decent batting at the other end and we went to tea at
the 40th. Rather daunting -
chasing 332 off 40 overs and two batsmen with crocked hamstrings. Sheesh! Blair
Simm and Richard D opened, with Kerry back on the track as Richard’s runner.
Things immediately kicked off in the same style (smacking the bowling about) and
Blair was very unfortunate to lob one to a fielder when on 4 runs. Richard was
joined by Shaun Perkinson who set out to bat in front of a multi-generational
group of wife, daughter, mother (in-law?) and sister. Richard raced to 50
followed closely by Perky, before Richard was out for 60. Kerry had been on the
field as a runner for 21 overs! Matt Reinholds walked out and joined Perky in
knurdling, stroking and caressing the bowling to all corners of the oval. Very
quickly, Matt was on 50 odd and
Perky knocked up a very well-deserved 104. We were almost keeping pace with the
run rate, especially as Burge joined Matt, diplomatically fed him all the strike
and stood admiring proceedings. Matt smashed a very rapid century of his own,
having ridden his luck through at least one dropped outfield catch, and the odd
swish and scramble back into the crease. It was really
unfortunate that we lost the two century-makers just as an against-the-odds win
was looking possible, the run chase lost momentum and the match drifted to a
close after the stumping of Simon McCashin for zip left Burge not out 18 and me
not out 4. Having been somewhat
despondent at the turn, it was quite a relief to have two superb batting efforts
to choose from for the GBK Man of the Match. Perky batted very well and it was
firm handshakes all round when the burgers went to Matt Reinholds for the pace
of his century, which included six 6’s and eleven 4’s. Special thanks to the big crew of supporters, the fellas at Hampstead for the match and to the lawns and courts of Hampstead for withstanding hostile fire all day!
