Hagley - Sunday 12th July 2009
Ladies and Gents
Another LNZCC win to report for last Sunday, with many positives.
It wasn't until the Friday that we had a full team, with 3 new-to-club players in Pedro Saralegui, Ben Orton and Liam Crowley.
Weather looked a bit ropey driving down, and as usual, the social calendar on the Saturday night preceding the game, meant we didn't kick off at 11.30, but at 12.00. There is talk of a get-together next year, on the Saturday night locally, with Stourbridge providing ample drinking venues, and entertainment to rival The Strip in Christchurch, The Viaduct in Auckland, The Waterfront in Wellington, and The Ashley Hotel in Greymouth. 2 years in a row, the correct call was made, and we won the toss. Team sheet looked strong in the batting front with Oliver, Simm, Penman, Swann and Dormer all capable of scoring, and quickly. Bowling, looked to be less enthusiastic, in youth, but semi reliable in experience with Penman, Diedrichs, Oliver, Dormer and Tikao.
So, onto the cricket, and having been bossed around on this very ground by a "Beefy, South African" with a good eye, we needed to bowl well, and that's exactly what we did. We contained their batting well, with a first wicket coming off Oliver's first over, with a slow, full toss, that the opener could nothing with, apart from help it dribble towards the stumps. It appears the club celebrations at fall of wickets in the field have been stifled by the removal of the said 'interesting articles' from the gear bag in a previous game. Police have not been called in to establish if either Mr Simm, (recently befriending the club gear bag) has removed the articles, or Master Holden, but the list of 2 suspects remains. We were bolstered in the field by 2 promising youngsters, Liam Crowley (Timaru) and Ben Orton (Hawkes Bay) who are over here, playing League Cricket in Leicester. And what a welcome addition to the team, displaying the skill, and energy that our club displays on occasion, only they managed to display this continuously.
Oliver and Penman bowled well, keeping the runs to a minimum, then ably supported by Bartle, Diedrichs, Dormer, Orton and Tikao.
The famous Hagley lunch did not disappoint. The past 3 years have seen the Hagley Sprint It wasn't until 3.30 that the deer were troubled, which is a great sign, considering the declaration was always going to be around 3.30 to 4.00, and at 250 we were called in, which was a fair declaration.
Blair Simm and new recruit Ben Orton opened, and Blair was not lucky enough to have his skipper fielding for Hagley, and the first catch was taken at 5 runs on the board.
That brought the 2 Sydenham Cricket Club (Christchurch) men together at the wicket, and a treat was in store for those on the sidelines. A full repertoire of shots were being displayed, to all parts of Hagley, and at one stage a camp was set up in the deer field opposite the pavilion to retrieve the balls being played there. Majestic stuff, and very pretty to watch for the LNZCC, not so much for Hagley. So it was 160 runs later that the partnership was broken. Ben and Liam batted us in to a winning position.
The entertainment was not over just yet, Ben Dormer also batted with style and not to be overlooked Phil Bartle contributed a cameo innings, with shots to different parts of the ground, and deer fields. (with the 2nd time Swanny has seen him hit a 6) Pedro Saralegui, ensured he was not packing the bag, with a lovely boundary included in his debut innings, much to the rapturous applause of both sets of supporters, after the field were brought in. Long story short, LNZCC chased down a decent score, with some fine performances from the entire team.
