Four Elms - Sunday 26th July 2009

They won but it could have been very different.

In previous years we've batted first and pounded them into submission before watching them block out for a draw. This year we decided a different approach. Let them bat first, encourage them to have a go and score 200 plus, then bat and chase them down. It would have worked and a well crafted victory ours to laud had it not been for the inability of the LNZ middle order to respond after Perkinson and Simm opened with a 85 run partnership. Despite Burgess, Reinholds and Chris Lee all getting starts, none were able to go on and we eventually fell 16 runs short of the 254 set by Four Elms.

Simm received the GBK man of the match for a well crafted 86. It could have gone TP's way as he almost steered us to victory with the bat unluckily being run out for 28 after a mix up with Richard Holden with the team score 237. Chris Lee returned to the fold after a few years absence and bowled well capturing a wicket. Nothing else of note happened other than the odd comment from the Swan. Notably chastising a certain opposition player for catching a ball intended for his gloves as it was hurled in from the covers and holding the game up by a good ten minutes as he taped his fingers in readiness for this stint behind the stumps; only for Richard Holden to come steaming in with the new ball into the breeze.

Thanks to Four Elms for a fantastic BBQ lunch and afternoon tea and for their general hospitality. Also to Marty for umpiring under the gaze of an official from the Association of Cricket Officials as he seeks consideration for the Surrey panel of umpires which would enable him to stand in on premiership 1st division matches.............not at the expense of LNZCC matches of course.

Although disappointing to lose a good day had by all.

Matt Reinholds
