Christ College NZ - Saturday 18th April 2008
The weather Gods were smiling and Arundel looked a picture of perfection as we drove through the Estate gates to be greeted by the ringing of Church bells at the nearby Castle and the warm hospitality of Arundel Chairman Alan Wadey and Director John Barclay.
LNZ took the field, with Sam Martin taking the new ball against his old school - he was a member of the Christ’s College 1st XI himself some 23 years earlier! He bowled with the enthusiasm and zest of a 17 year old and in partnership with Tony Penman at the other end (who found his line and length from the outset as though he’d been bowling all winter), restricted the scoring and put the youngsters under considerable early pressure. George Brooksbank then came into the attack, finding the edge of the bat regularly and was well supported by Shaun Perkinson behind the stumps, who caught everything that came his way. Mike Oliver and Gerald Walsh shared the bowling at the other end before Richard Holden tested the track for some early season turn. Martin and Brooksbank rounded off the bowling for the innings, finishing off with 3 and 5 wickets respectively.
A superb roast pork lunch was served between innings as we contemplated our run chase of 217 over a few beers. McGrath and the captain opened the batting, hoping to emulate their last partnership of 186* for the first wicket while students at Cambridge. Sadly for them this was not to be the case with the skipper getting skittled in the first over giving his team the worst possible start (0-1), with McGrath following soon after.
Oliver (42) and Club Chairman, Fanning (33), then set about restoring the innings with a tidy partnership of 75 before both being dismissed in quick succession. Perkinson (43) offered a glimmer of hope with some elegant stroke play, however overs quickly ran out after some tight College bowling and the Club fell 50 runs short of the target.
All in all it was a great day out for the Club and an absolute privilege to play in such surroundings. Special thanks to Christ’s College Old Boy Michael Watt, who without, the opportunity to play at Arundel would not have been possible. Although the result did not go our way, Club morale is high and we look forward to following Sam Martin into battle in our next fixture against Wimbledon
