Chenies and Latimer - Sunday 17th May 2009
We completed a full 40-over one-dayer vs. Chenies & Latimer at
their ground northwest of London, despite Sunday May 17th 2009 being somewhat
rain-affected. At 10am, my phone was running red-hot with various members of the
team offering impromptu ‘you should see how wet it is here – we’re not playing
are we?’ weather forecasts. We were but couldn’t start on time. It had rained a
bit. Swanny and Richard Holden took public transport out there and Swanny had time to crawl under the covers to check the dry-matter content of the strip. Matt Fanning’s ‘I’ll be there at 12.30 – don’t start without me’ tactic came good when we agreed with the C& L skipper to have lunch first, then tee-off at 1.30pm.
Mike Oliver was breathing fire so came on after Kevin. Mike bowled fast and bouncy and was very unlucky as at least half a dozen thick edges snuck between fielders behind and square of the wicket. He did get some reward when he got a steeping one to come off the back of the bat and Tricky took the catch after racing around behind the slips cordon from gully.
Matt Fanning bowled the Second Annual Matt Fanning Over at the other end, then got greedy and kept the ball for the next over to bowl his second. Tricky needed a bit of cajoling but we got him on for another over and Craig took the aforementioned catch. Strangely, Tricky seemed a little keener to bowl now and sent down the lucky last, which he closed by taking out middle stump on the last ball of the 40th over, giving him the excellent figures of 4-18 off 4 overs. Well done Tricky.
It was a terrific effort to restrict C&L to 186 in 40 overs, with some sharp fielding from TP (with a not-quite-right hammie) Swanny behind the stumps (although Craig got him in the brisket when Swanny threw in a cameo redux of the Bodyline series from behind the stumps) and Blair Simm as well.
Mike Oliver joined Blair and a wonderful partnership blossomed. C&L’s best bowler, a young Aussie chap, fired them in with quite a bit of pace and bounce which Mike and Blair coped with very well. Blair’s disciplined half-century and Mike’s well-paced century were enough to see us home in an almost chanceless ‘we’re in the book’ combination of 170 runs. Tricky kept warm by keeping the pads on for 34 overs, and TP & Kevin looked after the book while regaling Nathan with tales of their youth in Wellington.
My thanks to all – some terrifically tight bowling, a committed effort in the field and a lovely display of quality batting - it was really rather pleasing to log a win there after falling short 2 out of the last 3 years. The GBK Voucher went to Mike, with Tricky a close second in the Sporting Index calculations. Thanks too to Martin Conway for umpiring with his usual consistency and to Karen Keyse and Sam Fanning for grinning and bearing it through the cold and rain showers.
