The Wimbledon Club - Sunday 27th April 2008

Start delayed by rain. The captains agreed to play a 35 over match.

Toss won by WCC, LNZCC chose to bat. (Strange but true)

It was a good reward that we stuck around to let the weather clear to start about an hour or so after the scheduled start. The umpires were also keen to get their own season going and as the grass was quite short at Wimbledon there were no problems with the quick drying outfield and dry footholds as the covers did their job.

LNZ opened with debutante Blair Simm and club chairman Matt Fanning but it was not long before Blair was back in the pavilion which brought David Holt to the crease who showed a variety of shots to take the ball to the boundary on many occasions. However, with the boundaries being one of the biggest we encounter in our season threes (or fours) can often be run if the batsmen stop admiring their shots and willing the ball over the rope. Matt at the end showed good patience to select his shots and progress into the forties.

Next in was the club’s make or break master blaster and father to be Richard Burgess who wafted his batter around to have the edge just miss the ball. Thankfully Burge got through to his 50 with a fine on drive six which gave our innings a respectable total of 154 for 9 at the end of the 35 overs.

With Wimbledon being in the Surrey Premiership and fielding 5 sides this season their batting line up was not to be taken lightly. Captain Sam Martin along with Mike Oliver opened the bowling but it was not to be Mike’s day as he came off after only two overs conceding 16 runs. Mike had earlier in the day made the long walk to the crease to only face just the one ball.

Kevin Marshall now came into the attack. Kevin was topping off a fine few days of celebrations that included our drinks party on Thursday, his 50th birthday in Rome on Friday and then back for Chelsea’s win over Manchester United. Marty umpired with Kevin back in Wellington during the 1980’s and he has still not lost his touch with some fine out-swingers. When Wimbledon reached 25 wickets started to fall at both ends and no real partnerships got going. Sam ended up with 5 for 44 and Kevin 4 for 17. Credit must also go to Matt McMillan who did some fine keeping in only conceding 3 extras.

Wimbledon ended their innings with only 84 runs and with the day producing a golden duck, a fifty and a five for there were a few jugs to be consumed.

After winning the GBK Man of the Match award Kevin along with Marty and Richard and Karen Keyse completed his weekend celebrations with a fine Thai dinner in East Sheen.
