Wanderers - Sunday 6th July 2008
Chairman Fanning took leave of paternal absence to hand yours truly the reins. For those in years to come checking the records via internet, that would mean Vancer. With the track being wet it seemed a good toss to win and like any self respecting bowler, I elected to field first.
Pretty bad decision after the first 4 overs when we’d been smacked for 35. Nathan Masters on his debut charged off a long run and bowling with zest was disrespectfully whattied for 6. Thankfully the first of three rain interruptions (it was after all finals day up the road at Wimbledon) occurred causing an hour’s break and some amber refreshment which was encouraged upon the Wanderers opening batsmen.
The match was rescheduled to a 40 over game with a limit of 10 per bowler.
Long run ups resumed together with cavalier stroke making. After 6 overs Wanderers were on 44. Then a dramatic turnaround occurred with Nathan claiming 2 wickets in the 7th over. The first caught behind the other a now mandatory catch at mid off for Dormer, who’s catch must now make double figures this year at that position.
At the end of the opening spells, Wanders had slumped to 63-5. Phil Bartle then came on and bowled as good a spell as seen recently causing the ball to wobble and grabbing a couple wickets. Graham Diedrichs is his first game for the year looked to exploit the pitch and provide some artful steering down of the opposition in intimidation. Alas this lost upon the batsmen.
Rich Holden came on and gave the ball some genuine tweak, whilst Gerard Walsh the destroyer of Royal Household (7-15 Tricky we await this match report) came on a got in some very tidy overs.
Of note there was 2 run outs in the innings. Gerard throwing down the stumps from the boundary with probably only one wicket to aim at. It was extraordinary, and Nathan making easy work when a short single that was unwisely taken to him.
However the best element of the innings was the bowlers using the conditions and picking up 5 catches behind the wickets. Pete grabbing 3 whilst keeping, Mike Oliver grabbing a top catch at gully showing levitation skills to make Air Jordan proud. Oh & I got a one hander at slip that modesty permits me to describe in full detail…
Wanderers were 108 – 9 and clawed their way to 152 all out. We have had little problem chasing down scores of 300 this year, so we were quite confident and it gave us an opportunity to bat a little.
The lunch was extraordinary. Think the Carlsberg advert for BBQ’s… there was meat aplenty. This fixture has gone to first place on the catering stakes.
Dormer, who had scored 80 odd this fixture last year and The Fish opened up. They confronted with the Wanderers Pakistani first class cricketer bowling leggies. His spell of 10 overs went for 14 and claimed 2 wickets.
Matt Reinholds first game of the season witnessed a great cover drive for 4. The following ball the delivery was chucked in short and Matt did well picking out the only fielder on the leg side boundary.
Wickets fell at a alarmingly regular pace. Walsh on his first delivery decided it had to go to the corner. No. Enter Masters to join Mike Oliver who is batting as well as anyone this year. They took the score from 50 - 5 to 100. Mike had straight hit their leftie for 6, then later in the over was held out for a 46.
A further partnership between Nathan and Diedrichs gave hope and nudged the score within 25. Nathan held out to the deep to expose the established LNZ 10 & 11 since pre millennium to claim the remaining runs.
We got to within 18 before Rich cover drove and set off for a run to be out by a yard.
All in all a close game we should have won (I’ll take full responsibility) but all got to bat and most got to bowl. On the day there were 2 bowled, 2 lbw, 3 run out, 13 caught.
Thanks to Marty. Who after a fruitful year of LBW’s only triggered the caught behinds after allowing them the chance to walk (read Pakistani former first class cricketer).
Peter Coleman got to score with his mentor and two more immaculate books you could never find.
Moment of the match was Fishy ducking one at short leg and one at second slip. The first was forgiven the second was comedy.
Mike Oliver also took a great catch on the boundary but carried it over for 6. Whilst mid air he was sound of mind to throw it back into play but it didn’t quite make it so the 6 stood.
GBK Man of the Match went to debutant Nathan Masters. He’ll hurry up most with his pace and bounce. Knocking over their two openers enabled the other bowlers the opportunity to enjoy their day.
