Ripley CC - Sunday 20th July 2008

With the toss won Fanning and Perkinson were looking forward to the prospect of making the most of perfect batting conditions…however both were back in the pavilion before a ball had been bowled….to fetch crash helmets after spotting a very athletic looking six foot three South African native warming up…who didn’t look like he bowled off spin. Sure enough he didn’t.

Perkinson kick started the innings with a classy 67 showing tremendous courage along the way after suffering what can only be described as a sickening blow to the mid-drift, sending a loud echo around the ground as his box vibrated several times producing immediate swelling and a hint of blood. Burgess arrived at the crease and from the outset dominated proceedings, slaying the bowling to all corners in a rapid 42. With the departure of Burgess, Reinholds went on to anchor the middle order with a combination of power hitting and control in a superb 59. Oliver was unlucky to receive a ball that didn’t bounce from the quick in his return to the bowling crease however some brave batting from the skipper saw off the remainder of this hostile spell. After Tippen was cruelly run out and the tail didn’t wag LNZ took the field to defend 262 allowing themselves the best part of 60 overs to bowl Ripley out.

Penman bowled exceptionally well in his spell of 8 overs before the tea break, taking 2 crucial wickets with a superb exhibition of line and length bowling. After last year, it’s fair to say the youngsters of Ripley have grown to fear him. Oliver and Walsh both bent their backs on a pitch that gave little assistance with the later picking up yet another LBW decision from umpire Conway. Reinholds and Holden were then brought on, bowling in tandem for the remainder of the innings. They went on to take six wickets between them - winning the game for LNZ with 3 overs to spare. Holden was awarded the Ripley trophy and GBK voucher for his spell of 19 overs which yielded 3 key wickets. He is at his best when given time to settle at the bowling crease. Fish kept wicket well on a wicket with variable bounce, encouraging the team throughout in the field. Thanks go to Conway and Coleman for their part in what was an enjoyable day for all – your efforts are greatly appreciated by all.

LNZCC won the toss and elected to bat in this declaration match:
