Goodwood - Sunday 17th August 2008

With many of the team enjoying the delights of Northfields House just down the road for the weekend, there wee no problems getting most of the team to Goodwood on time. Torrential rain the night before could have made the trip pointless but for some excellent covers we were able to get underway on time, afte the team had righted one of the side screens that had been blown over. The prospects for the day were mixed with some very low cloud. Goodwood won the toss and asked LNZ to bat.

Ben Dormer and Matt Fanning started with some gusto. 10 off the first over on a slow track with some very positive hitting. They continues in this vain before Ben finally holed out at mid wicket. Richard Keyse was next in and with some dodgy knees wasn't up to running short singles and also was trying to find the boundary. He again holed out trying to hits the ball off a very slow and low track.

Meanwhile Matt Fanning was batting very well and creep up to 44 before he too succumbed. At the other end Blair Simms was trying to do better than his father who had played here 35 years before. He had been out for 4, 1 of 9 wickets Pete Wilmer had take that day. The only difference  was  Pete Wilmer was also still playing for Goodwood today at the age of 60+. Blair was batting very sensible and with Mike Oliver falling lbw to a shooter LNZ were 4 down at lunch.

As usual we had a 3 course lunch which is usually LNZCC's downfall. However it was Goodwood who seem to suffer after lunch with a number of dropped catches that in polite terms would be called sitters. This did not stop Blair and Tony Penman from taking advantage and building a very good partnership to take LNZ over 200. Blair's luck finally ran out after an excellent 78.

This brought debutant Chris Bowden to the wicket, and with instructions to move it along, produced some excellent stroked. TP at the other end was as doggid as ever along with some lusty blows. He reached a well complied 50 not out at which the inning was declared at 264 for 5 off 58 overs. Hopefully enough on a wicket with very slow bounce and pace. Jamie Magne for Goodwood bowled from one end most of the day and took all 5 wickets with his left arms spin.

With the wind at his back TBE and Gerard Walsh opened the bowling. Tim bowled with pace but not a lot of luck. It was Gerard Walsh who pick up the first wicket in partnership with Marty with another LBW, 1 of 4 in the Goodwood innings

TBEs bowling arm did not get a wicket but he found his throwing arm (eventually) and effected an excellent run out

Mike Oliver had another LBW with his first ball, and was a handful with his extra pace and bounce , and was very unlucky to not get more wickets

Richard Holden and Chris Bowden bowled well but without luck. TP bowled well and took two wickets to go with his 50 earlier

With a steady flow of wickets, LNZCC were in the game but had not counted on Goodwood opener John Clifton making a century. He rode his luck and had a couple of lives and it was his innings that set up a possible Goodwood win. Mike Oliver pulled a hamstring stopping a short single and could not bowl again.

With the run rate up at 6 and over Goodwood were still having to push for runs. However TBE, TP and  Gerard could find no way through and Goodwood won the game with 4 balled to spare in the last over of the game.

An excellent days cricket with as usual bat dominating  ball and both side struggling

Many thanks to Martin Conway for umpiring as usual in his very fair way.

Jamie, the Goodwood captain, who was the 3rd generation of his family to captain Goodwood,  choose Blair Simm as his champagne man of the match and we hard a tough choice between Jamie Magne (5 wickets) and John Clifton with his 100 but we eventually  when with John.

TP picked up the GBK vouchers with his excellent 50* and 2 wickets

Many thanks to our many supporter who had made the journey down from London. The weekend at Northfields House was a success and plans are afoot to take the whole team down for the weekend. Many thanks to Emma, Ginny, and Charlotte in the planning and feeding of us all over the weekend. It was a great weekend, even if the result of the cricket did not go our way.

Scoreboard LNZCC 264 for 5 Declared (58 overs)      Goodwood 265 for 7  (58.2 overs)   Goodwood win by 3 wickets
