The Wimbledon Club - Sunday 29th April 2007

Oldies (ours and theirs) with time and overs on their side show how it’s done.

It was great to get this fixture underway on time at 1.30pm although the batting order had to be amended when “Marathon Man” Burgess turned up a little late. Sam Martin won the toss and elected to bat. Perhaps being advised that 500 runs were scored on the same pitch the previous day had something to do with his decision….or not.

Richard Keyse and Matt Fanning opened the batting and although shaky at times (too much beach cricket from Matt??) did look as though they wanted to take the shine off the ball pretty quickly, however some of the deliveries came through fairly fast and full. Richard was the first to go with playing onto his stumps off his pads to an in swinger. Matt was to quickly to follow which brought Burge to the crease along with fly swatter Pete Tippen who survived an early confident lbw appeal to a fullish ball. Just outside leg was the call from the diminutive umpire. Burge mistimed and was caught at mid off and the Pete was to follow with his score at 11. We were in trouble at 47 for 4.

Gerard Walsh hit some timely shots to reach 14 but he too was back in the pavilion along with Perky. Now it was time for new kid on the block Daniel Anson complete with Kevin Pietersen autographed boot to show us what he is made of.  Daniel looked good and ran his first runs fast but unfortunately spooned one to mid off.  Sixty four for 6. Yikes.

Enter 49 year old perma-tanned Kevin Marshall with new boots and a relaxed mind and also captain Martin who did not wish to have an embarrassing defeat on the card. Kevin had a dodgy hamstring but still managed to run a few threes when hitting out in to the deep on this large ground. Both did well and struck a few boundaries but injury was to hit Sam as he twanged his groin when going for a quick single. He struggled on for a few more overs until Burge was summoned as a runner. Kevin and Sam scored a fine partnership of 107 with no chances. Kevin was out for 53 while Sam was on 61 not out and in his first LNZ match Mark Cubitt was 0 not out at the close.

When LNZ took to the field we were confronted with the two Wimbledon openers wearing Wellington Collegians caps and sporting Kiwi accents. Now it was time for club debutante Daniel Anson to walk the talk. He opened the bowling with a leg side wide. Great start. But it did not take him long to get into his stride and he took the middle stump out of the ground in his second over with a fine out swinger. Wimbledon 6 for 1.  Sam bowling off 10 paces kept things tight at the other end and in his fourth over was credited with an lbw. To which Mr. Holden was prompted to ask “Many more to follow Marty??”

From now on it was difficult for LNZ to make a break through as Wimbledon captain Andy Drummond and another club stalwart Simon Waymouth amassed a 106 run partnership. Andy was not out 87 when the target was reached. Sam somehow kept on bowling for 9 overs and fortunately there was not much sign of the dodgy hamstring from Kevin Marshall during his straight through 10 overs. Unfortunately his last went for 17. Mr. Holden bought one wicket for 33 off his six overs.

A good cricket match that had our senior members not performed could have had us in the clubhouse a lot earlier than expected. Club chairman Matt Fanning awarded the GBK man of the match award to Sam Martin.
