Wanderers -
Sunday 8th July 2007
The weather God's
thankfully smiled on us on Sunday and LNZCC was able to complete its first match
since 'Hagley' in mid June.
All omen's were good for LNZCC prior to the toss, we had 8 of 11 players
present, TP had his shoes and the sun was shining. Fanning won the toss and
decided to bat on the basis of only having 8 players, but coming into view of
the pitch was the duo of Anson and Foley and hastily the decision was reversed.
The change of decision was soon vindicated by a superb opening spell by the duo.
Foley bowled with real pace and unsettled the batsmen on numerous occasions and
Anson chimed in with some beautifully bowled deliveries. LNZCC soon had the
Wanderer's on the rope at 37 for 3 and Dormer even had the audacity to call on
feeding the opposition some runs, this a side we have rarely beaten ! The
comment was taken to heart by Penman and Swann when it seemed that Moses parted
them both as a regulation edge went between them both at keeper and 1st slip.
After a marathon opening spell of 15 overs between the duo it was time for a
change with Mike Oliver bowling a 'pick and mix' assortment of Jaffa's and
beamers whilst Fletch was tying up the other end and was very unlucky not to
pick up a wicket after another fine display of spin bowling. After one beamer to
many Oliver was replaced by TP who bowled a great spell which resulted in a fine
caught and bowled. Next into the fray was new boy on the scene Jonty Kelt whom
bowled spell of cunning and guile, snaring the Wanderer's top scorer with a
peach of a delivery. Foley and Anson were called back to mop up the tail and if
they were supported by their slips fieldsman would have knocked over Wanderer's
for a lot less than their final total of 175. The effort of restricting
Wanderers to this score was a fine one by a very good bowling display and some
fine fielding with the likes Tippen and Cubitt busy in the field all day.
The LNZCC batsmen were in no mood to be outdone by their bowling unit as Dormer
and Oliver took apart the Wanderer's bowling attack. Dormer was particularly
punishing on the Wanderer's attack and managed to lose two balls within the
first 10 overs with some pinch hitting. A fine afternoon tea did not dampen the
resolve of the openers whom continued to plunder runs at will and only Dormer
believing he was bowled and subsequently being stumped would thwart the
onslaught. The opening partnership yielded 122 and the match was as good as done
with Dormer contributing 70 from 66 balls. Oliver carried his bat and struck a
well constructed 83 and LNZCC managed to coast home with the loss of 3 wickets
and only requiring 32 overs to get the necessary runs.
As always thanks to Marty for doing such a great job umpiring (6 lbw's and 2
stumped decisions in the match), Peter for his scoring even with Mike Oliver
peppering the scorer's hut and your colleague taking a head shot from one of
Mike's sixes. Thanks to Gerrard's Cross for providing the venue and wholesome
lunch and afternoon, thanks to The Wanderer's for a thoroughly enjoyable match
played in a good spirit. And no less thanks for the LNZCC players on Sunday for
a really good fun match with plenty of good cricket, good laughs played in good
company.
GBK Man of the Match - Two vouchers were presented for their fine efforts with
bat and ball to Mike Oliver and Scott Foley.
