Ventnor - Sunday 5th August 2007
The LNZCC annual tour
to Ventnor was again a treat for all involved. The sun decided to turn out and
the welcoming beach of Ventnor provided much required relief for all over the
weekend.
The Dinner on Saturday night was full of fun and high jinx, with most feeling
worse for wear on the Sunday morning.
After a morning of regaling stories of the night before and a 2 hour cricket net
on the beach where 3 generations of Fish's played, LNZ were set to play against
Ventnor. Holden lost the toss and LNZ were asked to field, as the players looked
down onto the wicket from a high this did not look like a favourable task with
the mercury heading north and no wind to speak of, it was to be a long 40 overs.
After Bills-Everett first two deliveries questions were being raised as to if we
would finish the first overt let alone 40! It must be said that the 9 ball first
over of Bills Everett may have had something to do with his general well being,
never has a greener looking man bowled a ball, but after a quick 'pinch' from
his skipper he was back to his best. Mike Oliver even with a sore shoulder from
Saturday nights activities took a liking to the conditions and soon had Ventnor
reeling at 20 for 2 with some fine swing bowling. Things could have been even
better for LNZ had the Swan not attempted to fly to 2 slip and poach a
regulation catch, this proved to be a costly miss with the batsmen going onto a
well compiled 75. Ventnor continued to pile on the runs and things were looking
ominous for LNZ but with some good tight bowling from Walsh and Fletch taking a
key wicket LNZ managed to reign the batsmen in. LNZ managed to bowl out Ventnor
before the allocated 40 overs were completed with Bills Everett left stranded
with no batsmen left to go for a hatrick.
The overall fielding of LNZ was not up to it usual standard, and a review of the
preceding nights activities may have something to do with this.
Holden captaincy was a mix of the unorthodox, where Fish was admonished for
stumping one of their batsmen and particular fieldsmen were curtly dealt with
for various misdemeanours.
The Dressing room was confident that the total of 234 could be chased down,
unfortunately the confidence did not translate into any sort of performance.
Dormer and Fanning both failed at the top of the order with a mixture of bad
shot selection and bad luck. Burgess strode to the wicket and a command
performance was required aka a repeat of last years century - all was looking
promising after he and Tricky steadied the innings and even after Tricky's
departure LNZ were still in a reasonable position with Oliver and Burgess at the
crease. Unfortunately for Oliver he was adjudged stumped which looked an unlucky
decision for him and the team, with this dismissal LNZ never recovered losing
wickets at regular intervals. Fish, Fletch and Bills-Everett showed a certain
amount of character in getting LNZ to some form of respectability but no where
near the required target. LNZ were all out in the 38 over for 132.
LNZ were thoroughly out played by a well drilled team whose player all new their
role in the side and played as such - Well done Ventnor.
Like any good LNZ team the disappointment of the loss was put aside post a
couple of beers and with the introduction of a frisbee throwing competition life
seemed allot better again - for the record Mike Oliver won the frisbee throwing
comp.
In summary it was another great weekend enjoyed by all LNZ players and families,
thanks to all for making the tour and hopefully we can translate our off the
field performance onto it next year ! Well done Marty for your MOM performance
over the weekend.
Toss was won by Ventnor who elected to bat in this 40 over match.
