Ripley CC - Sunday 22nd July 2007

Believe It Or Not the day dawned fine. After some indifferent weather over the past week we were relieved to awake to some good old classic English summer sunshine. Hopes were high for a full days play and not even a soggy pitch could dampen spirits...TP had remembered his boots, Fletch and Barkle were into their first pint and it was business as usual as the LNZ openers strolled to the wicket after the toss was lost. Perhaps the happiest member of the Club however was Peter Coleman, who must have thought all his Christmas's had come at once when he arrived at the ground to find a busty, pretty blond sitting in the score box waiting for him...it was the biggest smile seen on his face in all his time associated at the Club...regretfully however it was short lived...after dropping some pretty good scoring chat throughout the first session of play, Peter lost his scoring princess after a ball was unfortunately hit thru her car window. Sods law Peter, however I'm sure you'll have you're name down for next years fixture..

Eager to assert ourselves on the Ripley attack from the outset Fanning struck a couple of fine straight sixes and we were on our way. A brisk start on a pitch that amazed all by bouncing and only some clever playing and missing by the openers allowed the foundation to be set for a big score. Fanning departed with the score on 77 attempting a third six and was well stumped by the Ripley keeper and was replaced by Oliver who looked in fine touch until one held up on the drying pitch, taking a top edge and skying to cover. This paved the way for Burgess, now the elder statesman of the LNZ batting line-up these days, who dominated from the outset keeping the Ripley bowlers under constant pressure and the run rate high with some textbook hard hitting.

Maybe not so textbook was Barkle, keen to impress in front of the mother in-law, he lead the way for LNZ throughout the day. This started with the Southern Man downing 7 pints on the balcony before making his way to the wicket where he proceeded to smash the bowling to all corners on his way to a whirlwind 66. He later followed his robust performance with the bat up during the evening session with a superb reflex catch at short cover to give Foley his bag of five. Not content to stop there, he then went on to take a couple of crucial wickets during the final hours play with his clever off spin.

Tippen arrived at the crease not only under the pressure to score quick runs but also with the burden of having Oliver arrive in the middle to umpire...desperate to have another player score less than his 15 and hence relieve him the infamous duty of packing the team gear bag. Unselfishly he was dismissed in the 46th over in the quest for further quick runs [..not as a result of an Oliver decision], which prompted a declaration with the score on 298. A good effort by the batsman given the delayed start to the game, various lost ball issues and the initial state of the pitch...thus giving our bowlers the best part of 58 overs to dismiss the Ripley batsman. By this stage the pitch had transformed into a good batting wicket and it was widely accepted that a concentrated performance in the field would be required in order to win the game.

Foley, eager to press his claims to being one of LNZ leading bowlers alongside Vancer and Sam Martin, took a wicket with his first ball and by tea had claimed all 4 Ripley wickets putting LNZ well on top. He finished the day with six wickets, five of which were taken with the first ball of the over. It was a truly great performance by the young man in his first year at the Club. Bartle took over from Oliver who bowled a tidy but short spell and proceeded to keep the pressure on the Ripley batsman, having their eventual century maker dropped while still in single figures. Penman joined him at the other end and bowled with his usual aggression, with the LNZ fielding effort picking up considerably [due to the fact the fielders were too scared to leak any runs off the great man's bowling]. Both bowled well and were cruelly denied the longer spells they deserved. Holden (who incidentally still hasn't done the decent thing and invited any of the younger members [Matt Fanning you are not included in this group] of the Club to his house during Wimbledon to meet a certain Russian princess..) bowled a very tidy spell from the car park end and was rewarded with a wicket for his efforts. Fletch also bowled well, reverting to his full run for the first time in 10 years in frustration after the captain refused to give him his customary deep mid-wicket, and was unlucky not to take more than the one wicket. He did however take a marvellous running diving catch at square leg off Foley's bowling, covering all of 10 metres in slow motion - a crucial catch at the time. Tippen kept wicket with aplomb throughout and didn't deserve the job of packing the team gear bag after such a solid performance.

In the end LNZ took the 10th Ripley wicket with 12 overs still remaining in the days play with the home side dismissed for 221. All in all a good result for the Club and we were all thankful to have a full days cricket after what's been a patchy English summer to date.

The GBK Man of the Match and Ripley Trophy for Cricketing Excellence was awarded to Foley for his fiery bowling spell which yielded him the fine figures of 6 for 33, receiving the Cup from young Rosie Barkle and the GBK voucher only after successfully climbing the famous pavilion bar beam [not done since Burgess back in 1998] which he successfully completed on first attempt without appearing to strain a mussel...also claiming a bonus £20 off TP for his troubles after he'd doubted the young man's jungle abilities.

Thanks yet again to Conway and Coleman for their constant support of the players who are indebted to their efforts week in week out.

Matt Reynolds now leads the Club into battle against Four Elms next Sunday. May you be blessed with further good weather!
