Goodwood - Sunday 19th August 2007

The weather outlook for the game was not good. Many calls were received on Sunday morning from wet London based players, but with some luck, the south coast was dryish, the pitch had been covered, and we managed a full day of cricket.

In an unusual move, the Goodwood captain, Matt, asked LNZ to bat without a toss, claiming a weakened batting side. This is what skipper Richard Fish wanted to do anyway.

In strode Pete Tippen and Matt Fanning to opening the batting. The pitch was doing a bit and the boys struggled to come to terms with its slow low nature, with both preferring the ball to come on. Their frustration got the better of them and the both fell trying to go over the top and only ended up holing out to mid off in both cases. 18-2, which was not the plan.

Ben Dormer, after two low scores in previous games and a golden here last year, was understandably nervous and had been talking about keeping his head down “this time”. He was joined by Richard Keyse. Both played with control and aggression, or better known as the “Block / Bash” approach to cricket. The slow outfield meant 4s were hard to come by and Tricky was struggling having to runs many 3s. He could be seen visible panting and wincing with pain with every run. Ben on the other hand was nearly lapping Tricky. Tricky’s response was to hit 2 marvellous 6s over the longest boundary. Clearly, the arms are in better shape than the knees. The both reach 40 odd to take us to lunch at 103 for 2, a much better position.

As usual, Goodwood supplied an excellent lunch with a main, desert and cheese. Clearly, Ben had been eyeing up another dessert as he claim he did not see the first ball after lunch and was soon walking back to the pavilion for 45. This brought Mike Oliver to the wicket. Mike looked all class and was soon into his stride. However, Richard Keyse could not continue his pre lunch form and was out short of what have would have been a well deserved 50 for 43. Tony Penman soon followed aggrieved about a close decision that did not go his way. This brought club debutant Matt McMillin to the wicket to join Mike.

Both played some excellent cricket with Mike being particularly severe and taking on the Goodwood bowlers with balls flying in all directions. He raced to 50 and when Fishy called the innings to a close on 235, he had made a superb 82 and Matt a composed 33.

Vance Thompson and TP were both fresh and opened the bowling. With the pitch drying out, there was some movement off the track. Vance was fired up and bowled with good pace. He removed their dangerous opener Tim with a good in swinging yorker. TP got a well-deserved LBW

Paul “Fletch” Christian replaced Vance and was keen to get amongst the wickets to catch Scott Foley in the race for the bowling prize. He started to weave is magic and was soon rewarded with a little dart of a ball.

Tea came with Goodwood 4 down and in some trouble. The highlight of tea was TP and Fletch try to bring down a precariously balanced branch on the 250-year-old Cedar tree that was right beside the pavilion. Clearly, their talents are in cricket and not lumber jacking.

Richard Holden came into the attack after tea and claimed an excellent wicket with his first ball, using his flight and the cross wind to bowl one of Goodwood’s dangerous batsmen.

Fetch called for the lid for a close fielder and Matt McMillin gladly done the helmet to field at short leg. The pressure was on the Goodwood batsmen and when one played the ball onto his foot the ball flew low to the right of Matt close in and he reacted superbly and took an excellent catch.

Matt McMillin replaced Richard Holden and had to take a bit of punishment for Goodwood’s star of the day. However, he played one shot to many and Ben Dormer took a running diving catch in the deep that could have graced any test ground around the world and not been out of place. A truly excellent catch that will remain in the memory of LNZ and Goodwood players for many years to come.

Vance was off a shortened run as the light was fading. He bowled very well and bowled Goodwood veteran Pete Wilmer to claim the last wicket. It should be noted it is Pete’s 45th game against LNZ, which is more than the age of most of the team!

An excellent win for LNZ after two previous defeats to Goodwood.

Pete Tippen kept very well and it was an excellent all round fielding and bowling performance.

Goodwood chose our champagne man of the match as Ben Dormer for his 45 and the fantastic catch, while skipper Richard Fish chose Mike Oliver as the GBK man of the match for his fine 82 and excellent close in fielding.

Any thanks as always to Marty for his fair and excellent umpiring.

As always, we had many supporters who made the trip down to Goodwood. It was not a day for sunbathing and many could be seen in ski jackets: hardly August weather. Your support is always valued and welcomed.

Again, Goodwood made us very welcome, with excellent hospitality and cricket played in an excellent spirit.
