Auckland Versus Wellington - Saturday 10th February 2007 Another great weekend of cricket and golf at Taupo. Auckland after being controversially inserted were 7 for 15 after 12 overs. They managed, through spirited resistance, to get to 70. Tom Bassett providing a stubborn resistance, with a workman like 23. One of the best Auckland innings came from a Frenchman who had never held a cricket bat before, but outscored 6 of this much feted team. Grubbie Orr contributing with one of the finest knocks in his career. He made a magnificent 17, in which he several times threatened to score a boundary. His dismissal came only when he lofted one to cow corner in typically dismissive fashion, and managed to clear the square well but faded. Troy Newton, the star of the show, took a fantastic catch running in 30 metres from the boundary, ending the brave Auckland resistance. Troy taking 3 for 8 off 4 and Grant Cederwall overcoming his painful knee to take 4 for 8 off 8. Steve Wainwright also contributing 2 for 6 off 2. Auckland bowled well, yet were lucky to get Newdick out for a low score. Wellington, in reply made the requisite runs in quick time. John Taylor-Smith 17 and the innings of the day was a chanceless and elegant 30 not out from Geoff Hunt. In the beer match Auckland were offered an opportunity to redeem themselves, they emphatically declined, with a singular lack of aplomb. The dinner was again at John Irvine's extended restaurant. John Reid gave an interesting and impassioned speech about being match referee at an international level which was well received. His book was auctioned and the evening was an undoubted success with about 40 attending. The golf the next day again was played in magnificent conditions. It was close, Auckland managing to slide in front 4 1/2 to 5 1/2. The crowd were desperately disappointed to see Wellington denied a well deserved clean sweep. |
