Wanderers - Sunday 9th July 2006 It was an eventful day for LNZCC at Gerard's Cross Vs The Wanderer's. The Wanderer's had proclaimed to have a weak side this year but upon arrival at the ground we were greeted by an ex Springbok captain dressed in white. By our reckonings anyone who can don the boots for Boks could be a reasonable cricketer... The usual bedraggled nature of LNZCC was on show with TP doing his best to mimic his 3rd form year at Collegiate running round in his whites with his R M Williams boots on, Perky to the rescue with a spare pair of boots. LNZ won the toss and elected to bat with the premise that we could chase anything down. The opening bowlers had a tough task with the luckless Thompson bowling with verve and swing, but was not supported by his fielders as both openers had let offs at gully. With the feeling of angst consuming VT he eventually had the opening bats middle wicket cart-wheeling back in the 10th over of the game. Tim Everett Bills bowled well and kept a tight reign on the Wanderer's batsmen and the young lad looks like a contender for a call up to the North's bowling line up for this year. The Wanderer's were set for a big total as the outfield was
hard and fast and the batsmen on display were all class. The LNZ bowlers were
coming in for some stick at lunch and the Wanderer's were well positioned at
185/2 off 30 overs. Post the lunch of the season (thanks to John Price and the
team at Gerrard's The opening stand of fifty by Fish and Dormer was all action and entertainment, the highlight being post the 3rd beamer send down to Fish by Bobby Skinstead Fish squared up to the former Bok captain who was seen to be quaking in his boots. The foundation was set for LNZ to chase down the score, after the departure of Fish there were some brief cameos by Burgess and Perkinson who peppered the boundary with sixes but both were caught going for the boundary again. By tea LNZ had gone from 50 for 0 to 100 for 4 off 15 overs, what was required was a controlled innings and up stepped Peter Gibson with a great knock which stabilised the innings and gave LNZ a sniff. Pete and TP took LNZ to 215 for 6 with 70 required off the last 9 overs as the tempo required to be raised so did the risks and Gibson eventually holed out for 67 and with that went LNZ chance to win the match. The lower order did a manful job but LNZ were found to be 40 short of the requirement. The match was enjoyed by all with the next generation of LNZ cricketers running about on the boundary and the Wanderer's proving to be a good side and a lot of fun too boot. The GBK man of the match went to Peter Gibson for his knock, thanks to Marty for umpiring and all the players for coming out to Gerrard's Cross Scoreboard Wanderers 285 (45 Overs) LNZCC 232 (44.4 Overs) All Out LNZCC lose by 53 runs
