HAC - Sunday 27th August 2006
On a glorious bank holiday Sunday LNZCC managed to muster the required 11 with a mixture of old and new members. Turning up on the day was the clubs longest standing member in Mike Sutton, unfortunately not to play but to watch the match in the beautiful BOE grounds.
One of the more peculiar tosses started this match, with what seemed like a three mile hike out into the wicket from the pavilion we managed to lose the toss and were informed ten minutes later that HAC were to bat.
Oliver and Bartle opened the bowling with very tidy spells, giving the batsmen very little to hit and keeping the opposition to less than 40 off the first ten overs. It was left to Fletch to weave his magic and break the opening stand with a catch to Pete Tippen. The heart of the HAC middle order was ripped out by Allen (Blackie), with some finely crafted bowling. HAC went on to post a competitive total of 204 of their 40 overs with their opening bat hitting a century and their captain running out 3 of their batsmen!
LNZ as always started with gusto with Ben Dormer top scoring with 45 runs, the middle ordered promised much and delivered little as all were guilty of attempting to hit their off spinner out of the ground. LNZ seemed to be on track with Mike Oliver and Glyn Thompson at the wicket, but a couple of quick wickets left LNZCC at 169/7 and Oliver the only recognised bat left and Walshe was given the instructions just block and give everything to Mike.
But Walshe had other ideas and he treated the HAC bowlers with the same disdain he showed to his captains words of wisdom and preceded to clobber 18 runs from an over and with that swing the match back into LNZ's favour. Mike and Walshe took LNZ home with Mike hitting a well hit 44 not out and this along with some fine bowling and fielding take the GBK man of the match award. Thanks to all for a
great day and especially Marty and Peter for umpiring and scoring respectively. HAC elected to bat in this 40 over match with 10 over limit to bowlers. GBK man of the match Mike Oliver
