Goodwood - Sunday 20th August 2006
With a team made up of at least 7 past and present keepers in the side, bowling was always going to be an issue. However, the toss was lost on a grey day and Goodwood after some deliberation decided to ask us to bat.
Matt Fanning and Mike Singleton opened and all was looking good until Mike put one down backward squares throat. Burge after his recent century was keen to get in and continue his fine form. However, a quick single to Goodwood’s best fielder saw him run out without scoring. Comments on the boundary, like “2 ½ hours to get here for this; f**k”, “I want to get back out there” were heard from Burge.
However, he was not alone in not troubling the scorers. Ben Dormer also on the back of a recent century received a peach of a ball first up and was bowled for a golden. 15-3 and we were in trouble.
In comes Shaun Perkinson to join a bewildered Matt. The two started to rebuild the innings with some controlled aggression. Perky was looking in great form and picking the bad balls to hit. Matt was also looking strong with the occasional swing and a miss outside off.
However there was one swing too many and he got a faint nick to the keeper and showing good sportsmanship walked with out Marty needing to raise a finger.
Pete Gibson showed considerable control and supported Perky who was looking very strong as he passed 50. Pete finally decided to have a go but also put one down backward square’s throat. 98 for 5 and still not lunch. Pete Tippen again supported Shaun very well and they took us through to lunch.
After a sumptuous lunch provided by the Goodwood team, Perky carried on where he left off. However, Pete was not so lucky and this brought Club veteran Tony Penman to the wicket. With his 4 kids and wife in the crowd, TP was out to impress. Again, he provided ample support for Perky who reached his century in style. We were reaching some sort of respectability at 183 for 6 when TP was out bowled.
Andrew Swann was also out bowled without scoring and things were not so good. On joining Perky in the middle, Skipper Richard Fish said to him we need to bat for another 45 minutes to get some more runs and not leave to much time. However, 45 seconds latter Perky had skied one to point, his first bad shot of the day and brought a glorious innings at Goodwood to an end. 118 with 92 in boundaries does not begin to tell you the full story of one of the best innings I have seen Shaun play. The GBK award and bubbly was deservingly his. A couple of balls latter Tim Bill-Everetts was lucky to be dropped at mid on but not further scoring was done and Richard Fish was out lbw. 195 all out and plenty of time for Goodwood to reach their target.
Tim Bill-Everetts and Pete Gibson opened the bowling. They bowled without luck but were very tight giving nothing away. Pete got the first break through with a good catch by Burge who had plenty of time to run around to second slip from first to take a deserved wicket. Richard Burgess who was still fuming from his early departure from the crease was first change. At tea, they were 1 down but we still had a target to bowl at. After tea, a couple of chances went down off Burge and Tim, and Goodwood slowly but surely crept over the 100 mark. This was probably the turning point of the game as it was always going to be hard defending 195.
Goodwood kept us in the game with a run out turning for 4. However even with the team still trying to motivate each other our chances were getting slim. A deserved wicket for the hard working Tim Bill-Everetts was all the success we were to have as Goodwood sealed the game with 12 overs to go.
Many thanks to our many supporters young and old who came down from London and afar to cheer us on. Marty as always was fair over the 100 overs and we are lucky to have such a great umpire.
Many thanks to Goodwood for their wonderful hospitality. We were well treated and fed as always. A lovely lunch, tea and pizzas afterwards meant we left full but not with the win we came for.
