Four Elms - Sunday 24th July 2005

For the first time in three seasons the Four Elms fixture was played resulting in a LNZ victory.

Highlights of the day included:

bullet

The return of long standing club members Dave Tikao and Gordon Harcourt after a long playing absence. The former contributing 5 tidy overs, and the latter, on ending the days play, having not played for such a long time, he'd forgotten the club tradition of the days lowest scorer packing the gear bag when he announced to everyone that he was off early, only for Burge to Interject with a "Haven't you forgotten something Gordon?"

bullet

Tricky's 64 which included shots all round the ground.

bullet

An outstanding opening stand of 94 between Mike Oliver and Andrew 'the Swan' Swanny; although there was no repeat of the now infamous 'Swan' ramp shot last performed against Oxford Downs last season.

bullet

The donning of LNZ whites by current black cap Andre Adams after Burge sought respite in the bar. This raised the debate of whether the North Island born black cap would now be available for this seasons North v South game.

bullet

GBK Man of the match bowling figures from Paul Christian (Fletch) of 14.3 overs, 5 maidens, 22 runs, 7 wickets.

bullet

The catch by 'the Swan' on the cows corner boundary, made by running back and plucking the ball from the sky in order to prevent a certain six, and then the resulting celebrations as he proceeded to run in the opposite direction from marauding LNZ team mates.
In fact, had it not been for the off spin bowling of Fletch, the day could have been very different after LNZ declared their innings at 259-5 after just 44 overs with all batsman making decent contributions.

Four Elms were rampant in response piling on 92 for the first wicket in quick time despite a fine opening spell of bowling from Ryan Edwards. However, queue Fletch and 'the Swan', who combined to dismiss the opposition danger man on the cows corner boundary. This proved the decisive moment and Fletch took full advantage of a pitch you might otherwise find on the sub-continent to bamboozle the opposition who eventually capitulated to be all out for 207 off 44.3 overs.

Afterwards Fletch celebrated his fine performance by buying a few jugs of beer which were dually quaffed. There was even time for 'the Swan' to Hoover a few unsuspecting bad debts.

Again then another fine day's cricket. Thanks to all for turning out. Thanks to Pete for scoring. Thanks from myself to Mike Oliver and Marty for their superb navigational skills and for enduring numerous three-point-turns on the way to the ground. Also to the Four Elms club for the fine Lunch BBQ which was much appreciated by LNZ players, families and friends.

Umpire Conway- 2 lbws given but 1 appeal withdrawn, and a call of no ball for more than two behind square leg - only the second time in my career of 35 years umpiring!!
Plus keeper Swann warned for encroaching.
