South versus North - Sunday 4th September 2005

The real story of this year’s South v North match is that the bowlers of both teams had the upper hand – with the ball and with the bat. 19 wickets fell in the match and both sides had a significant number of runs scored by their tail-enders: The North 83 runs from 8, 9 and 10 and the South 85 runs from 9, 10 and 11.

The South were on a mission to win a third match in a row, an unprecedented streak in LNZCC history. The resurgent North side came packed with skill, experience and verbal power to try and deny the South. On a hot, dry Sunday battle commenced.

The North started brightly with runs flowing, and even though the openers were dismissed early even more runs came from the flashing bats of Matt Reinhold (24) and Dave Chapman-Smith (20). Unfortunately Dave tried to smash one 6 too many and Richard Fish took his chance in the outfield – in fact Fishy had 2 chances and swallowed both with ease.
There followed a procession of wickets while the scoring remained rapid at 4.5 an over. The late addition to the South, Peter Gibson (straight off a flight from Kuala Lumpur) did some superb work behind the stumps, covering the almost empty 1st slip position and a creating very smart stumping down the leg side. Perky (22) added some useful runs, but it was a late rally from Kevin Marshall (38), Ryan Edwards (15) and Mark Solomann (27*) that added much needed runs before the North were finished off for a nice round 200 runs. The innings finished when Richard Holden set off merrily for a single after being particularly happy to get bat on one of Sam Martin’s deliveries - oops.
The South bowlers all chipped in with Sam Martin being especially effective (2-18) backed up by Steve Lester (2-27), Vance Thompson (2-57) and Windy Gale (1-31). Inspired use of bowling changes lead to first over wickets for Richard Keyse (1-13) and Mike Singleton (1-18).

So with the heat of the day passed, but lots of sun and 201 to get the South strode to the wicket. Unfortunately the top of the South order followed the North in contributing an underwhelming number of runs. Runs came at the rate of fewer than 2 an over (at 9 overs the score was 16 for 0) and then wickets fell regularly. The potency of the North attack was high as batsmen failed to get them away and then found fielders with lofted shots. Useful runs were scored by Sam Foley (20) and Aaron Gale (21) but the innings meandered until, with 9 overs to go, one South player’s wife was heard to say “you’ve got 72 to get off 9 overs and only 3 batsmen to go, you’re not going to get close”. And with Burge in fine sledging form it certainly looked unlikely.
Well they didn’t reckon on the might of the Southern tail. Peter Gibson scored a fine 30 and then Sam Martin launched a mighty attack scoring 35 off 21 balls. He rode his luck being dropped off consecutive deliveries, but it was only a dismal call from Lester (27*) that saw him run out ending his dusting of the Northern bowlers.

Things were now on a knife edge: with 4 overs to go the South were down to their last man and still needed 20 to win. It was lucky that the last man was Vance Thompson whose innings of 13 saw the South to nail-biting victory in the final over.

The beer tasted sweet and the finer points of the match were chewed over for a fair while as the sun set. Another roller-coaster of a South v North battle with the club showing good health to have so many useful players scrapping hard.
