South versus North - Sunday 4th September 2005 The real story of this year’s South v North match is that the bowlers of both teams had the upper hand – with the ball and with the bat. 19 wickets fell in the match and both sides had a significant number of runs scored by their tail-enders: The North 83 runs from 8, 9 and 10 and the South 85 runs from 9, 10 and 11. The South were on a mission to win a third match in a row, an unprecedented streak in LNZCC history. The resurgent North side came packed with skill, experience and verbal power to try and deny the South. On a hot, dry Sunday battle commenced. The North started brightly with runs flowing, and even though
the openers were dismissed early even more runs came from the flashing bats of
Matt Reinhold (24) and Dave Chapman-Smith (20). Unfortunately Dave tried to
smash one 6 too many and Richard Fish took his chance in the outfield – in fact
Fishy had 2 chances and swallowed both with ease. So with the heat of the day passed, but lots of sun and 201 to
get the South strode to the wicket. Unfortunately the top of the South order
followed the North in contributing an underwhelming number of runs. Runs came at
the rate of fewer than 2 an over (at 9 overs the score was 16 for 0) and then
wickets fell regularly. The potency of the North attack was high as batsmen
failed to get them away and then found fielders with lofted shots. Useful runs
were scored by Sam Foley (20) and Aaron Gale (21) but the innings meandered
until, with 9 overs to go, one South player’s wife was heard to say “you’ve got
72 to get off 9 overs and only 3 batsmen to go, you’re not going to get close”.
And with Burge in fine sledging form it certainly looked unlikely. Things were now on a knife edge: with 4 overs to go the South were down to their last man and still needed 20 to win. It was lucky that the last man was Vance Thompson whose innings of 13 saw the South to nail-biting victory in the final over. The beer tasted sweet and the finer points of the match were chewed over for a fair while as the sun set. Another roller-coaster of a South v North battle with the club showing good health to have so many useful players scrapping hard. Scoreboard North 200 All Out (43 overs) South 204-9 (44.4 Overs) South win by 1 wicket
