Hagley - Sunday 19th June 2005
Toss won by Captain
Burgess and he inserted Hagley in this declaration match. The Hagley chairman
immediate took the initiative of driving his Volvo around the outfield which was
trailed by the mower. (Hagley 1 LNZCC 0) David (out of early
retirement) Tikao in his first match at Hagley was asked to open the bowling and
in this first over an easy catch went begging but was dropped at short mid
wicket. (Hagley 2 LNZCC 0). Was this to be the start of a bad day in the field?
Well yes and no. A further three catches were dropped with one fielder getting a
hat trick for the wrong reasons. (A jug did follow in the clubhouse post match).
(Hagley 5 LNZCC 0) Fresh from being
dressed in our club colours (incl. trousers) and dispensing in excess of 500
glasses of Pimms for "A Dog's Show" at the Wimbledon Common Fair on Saturday
Richard Holden was brought into the attack early. Further opportunities went
begging behind the stumps (I hear the treasurer say we must get new gloves).
Richard ended up with respectable figures of 10/1/37/0. (Hagley 7 LNZCC 0) Dave Tikao not having
bowled for about two years was still getting into the swing of things but needed
a couple of wides (and no balls) in order to secure two wickets on the last ball
of two consecutive overs. (Hagley 7 LNZCC 2) After two hours lunch
was taken with Hagley 142 for 3 from 36 overs. We had had the no, was it time
for the yes? Yes it was with some inspirational bowling by Kevin Marshall and
some tight overs by Dave Morgan who claimed two wickets. But the turn around
started with a great low down catch in mid wicket taken by Dave T. LNZCC had
Hagley reeling when at 186 Kevin got three wickets in 4 balls. (Hagley 7 LNZCC
7) Philip (The Destroyer)
Bartle was brought into the attack once more and closed the Hagley innings out
with a fine lbw given by yours truly - well it was a full toss wasn't it. Eleven
overs after lunch and Hagley had lost 6 wickets for only 27 runs, leaving LNZCC
to get 204 to win with plenty of time and 20 overs from 6pm. Half time Hagley 7
LNZCC 10) As can be seen from
the FOW, LNZ started off badly with Andrew Swann playing on in the first over.
Normal business was resumed with Chappie taking his time and picking his shots
to score some fine fours and a glorious six. However when three wickets
(Chappie, Burgess and Robinson) fell for only 10 runs we were looking a bit
shaky. Mark Leicester and Dave Morgan eased the runs along with Dave hitting a
pretty big 6 over the bowlers head and into the side of the church. Tea was taken with
Dave on 18 and Kevin Marshall on 4. This is when the profiteroles were hoovered.
I understand they were delicious. So with a sugar rush to the head Dave Morgan
with first ball after tea attempted a repeat of his earlier 6 only to be caught
on the boundary. After some sensible
stroke play (of sorts) by Kevin he was able to advance the score slowly and at
this stage with thunder sounding all around a downpour looked imminent. With the
first big drops of rain the umpires (me) asked Hagley to quickly get their
covers (a very large plastic sheet) on to the pitch only for yours truly to
direct them to cover the wrong pitch. An honest mistake guv. With only 5 minutes
lost due to rain the inevitable was not far away. Dave Tikao with bat in hand
for first time in a couple of years was too slow with the feet and the keeper
had the bails off in a flash. Philip Bartle glanced at a rising ball and was
despatched only to be shortly followed by Richard Holden who was adjudged run
out leaving Kevin Marshall not out 30. With the early finish
the church bells were ringing not long after we had left the field which is a
first in a good many years of playing at Hagley. Thanks go to Steadie
for getting together the team (and gear) into the right cars and insisting we
leave at sparrows fart. For the record 10 of the LNZ players took the field for
11.30 with the number 11 at the start of the second over. Thanks also to Peter
Coleman for scoring where from below it can be seen he was kept busy on quite a
few occasions. My LNZCC man of the
match and magic moment would have to go to Kevin Marshall with his 3 wickets in
4 balls. And of course thanks
once again to Lord Cobham (unfortunately away on holiday) for the splendid lunch
and teas and to Hagley CC for hosting the match. Scoreboard Hagley 203 All Out (47overs) LNZCC 126 All Out (29 overs) Hagley win by 77 runs
