South (The Holders) versus North - Sunday 5th September 2004
North skipper Tony Penman struggled late on to get a full side, and in true cricketing spirit from the South, both teams had full sides to contest a game, that neither had been able to string together back to back wins to claim the Trevor Campbell Cup. Expectations were high of both sides and an enthralling 45 over match, under cloudless skies in near 30 degree heat at Datchet CC, would decide the cup's fate for 2004.
North Skipper TP won the toss and had no hesitation in putting The South in on a hard green wicket that was expected to offer some early life.
Southern openers Aaron (Windy) Gale and Mike Singleton struggled with some early tight bowling but gradually flourished and a promising opening stand started to take fold. Windy was struggling with a bad 'hammy' and decide boundaries were the best way to save his weary muscles.
Mike fell to a loose shot after making a well compiled 50 and was kicking himself. However the pair had put on 107 and gave the team an excellent platform to build on. Aaron struggled on and made his second 50 in a row went for a well complied 72.
Sam Foley struggled after being so fluent in last years match and went slogging across the line to Richard Holden for 15. Richard bowled well keeping a tight rein on the Southern batsmen and ended up with 3 excellent cheap wickets and was the pick of the Northern bowlers.
Steady (3) and Pete Tippen (14) tried to force the pace and fell cheaply.
Barks (27) struggled early in his first appearance of the year but showed glimpses of his old form. He and Sam Martin (23) ensure the scores ticked along at a good pace.
Fishy did not trouble the scorers and has now gone 2 North South games being out twice but only facing one ball. Work that one out!
Steve Lester (9*) and Sam kept the runs flowing over the last few overs. The South decided the extreme heat was a good excuse for a few jugs of beers as they watched their team compile 276-9 off their 45 overs.
Matt Hocken bowled well (1 wicket and went for only 4 an over) and looks like emerging as an excellent all rounder for the future. TP was as tight as ever, Chris (Dog) Lee bowled tidily for 3 wickets but poor old Philip Bartle and to a lesser extent Chris Shaw took the brunt of the Southern onslaught.
Don (I did know I was a keeper) Hudson, arriving just in time for the game from Geneva and though he is a true blue southerner, he turned out for the North (and as they say in America is in therapy to recover), kept well for the North.
The North were undaunted by the chase in prospect, and openers Chris Lee and Richard Dellabarca went about their task with purpose. Tight and fiery bowling from Sam and Sean Martin did not make life easy for them but they weathered the storm and put on 62 for the fist wicket.
Richard's fall brought John McIntyre to the wicket. Dog was fluent at one end but more tight bowling for the South made it hard for John to get runs and only briefly did he show some good form.
The northern batsmen were all trying to force the pace as the run rate crept up to 7 or 8 and over and wickets regularly fell. Tight bowling from Skipper Vance with 2 wickets and some excellent bowling from Steve (The Claw) Lester with 3 ensure it was always going to be hard for the North.
Dog tried to win the game single handed (as Burge had down a few years ago) but we fell for an excellent 68.
Some solid hitting from Matt Hocken and Phil (The revelation) Bartle, some wayward bowling from Steady and even worse keeping for Fishy (who had replaced a very tidy Mike Singleton) allowed the North a glimmer of hope. Steady did manage to catch a skier off his own bowling only for it to be correctly ruled a no ball for height which only inspired him become more erratic. Young Hamish Penman showed promise for the future for his 1 not out.
However it was not to be and the big guns for Sam, Sean, Vance and Aaron came back and closed out the game with some tight bowling and few more wickets.
The South ran out eventual winners by 26 runs. Sean Martin was applauded and lead the South of the pitch in his last game after 7 years with the club.
Vance Thompson resigned the captaincy of the South with a fine record of 3 wins and 1 loss. His shoes will be hard to fill in next years game where the South will try and make it 3 in a row.
In all a well fought and contested game, and thanks to all the supporters who came along and to Datchet CC for hosting the game and providing an excellent tea and facilities to use.
