Goodwood - Sunday 15th August 2004

Goodwood won the toss on a grey day on the South Coast and put us in. As is usual with this fixture LNZCC seem to bat first post a big total and then try and bowl Goodwood out. After last year when they won at a cantor LNZCC were determined to make amends.

TP and Perky gave the team a perfect start and wrote themselves into the record books with a stand of 158 for the first wicket. In a contrast of styles, TP the more measured and Perky the more explosive, they accumulated runs with easy on a slow but even paced wicket and only when they chanced their arm did they look like losing their wicket. They surpassed the partnership of 155* by Chris Shaw and Michael Deane from last year's game.

The loss of TP's wicket brought last years record break Chris Shaw, elevated to 3 from 7 last year, to the wicket, but this year it was not to report is 50 odd not out and he was soon out for 1.

Shaun Perkinson made a fine and refined 88 and only lost his wicket trying for that elusive century.

Richard Keyse struggled with his knees and made a tidy 21. Shaun Martin a cameo 10 before debutant Sean McCarthy and Matt Hocken steadied the ship and blasted a few quick runs to allow captain Fish to declare leaving Goodwood 233 to win in good time.

The Goodwood openers started well, playing in the same mould as our openers, not giving much away and the accumulating runs. Only when they tired to force the pace did wickets start to fall. All the LNZCC bowlers toiled away on a increasingly slowing track, and it was Matt Hocken and Sean Martin who controlled the middle to the innings, taking 5 wickets between them, that killed off any chase of a repeat of Goodwood's win lat year.

However the win that has alluded LNZCC at Goodwood for the last few years was not to be. Some solid batting from Goodwood especially captain Matt and others meant that the game end in a 'winning' draw for the Kiwis, with Goodwood on 154-7.

Goodwood were as always wonderful hosts. A sumptuous lunch with port (definitely trying to put us off our stride), a fantastic tea and pizzas after the match made the team and its many supports very welcome, and make this one of the more special games of the season.

Our man of the match, awarded by the Goodwood captain, went to Perky for his fine batting and sharp wicket keeping. Benny was awarded the Goodwood man of the match with two wickets and some resolute batting at the end of the Goodwood innings to salvage a draw.

Richard Dellabarca was due to play but the loss of his car keys (locked up on a boat) meant that James Keyse was able to play a full part in the game, and Hamish Penman was able to field for Chairman Richard Keyse who had not recovered from his over exertion against Lashings the previous week. (At his age he should no better!)
