Australia House - Sunday 22nd August 2004
We secured a fine win
against a strong Aussie House side numbering 10 and including two kiwis. Burge
(ably assisted by Chris Lee, Richard Holden, Sam Foley, and Ryan Edwards)
skippered the side to a close win in this 40 over match. We won the toss and
elected to bat and trundled along at about 3 per over for quite a while. But
when Burge came in at no 5 he rapidly upped the run rate and was level with our
patient opener Sam Foley in no time at all on 47. Sadly Burge was out at 49. Jay
Harrison scored a quick 22 and Sam was out for 71 - another fine knock. However, it was the
first ball to Cameron Faulkner that sailed over the bowlers head to land about
three quarters up the furthest poplar that impressed all at the ground. A few
balls later another massive six from Cam sailed over the Harefield ground
clubhouse and into the car park. Setting Aussie House a
target of 210 they set off at a brisk pace but their run rate dropped after each
wicket. Burge was wise to split both Chris Lee's and Ryan's overs and brought
them in at the end to claim valuable wickets. All our bowlers did well and Sean
McCarthy got a fine caught & bowled. It was then left to
yours truly (at square leg) to raise his finger for a run out of the Aussie
captain to close their innings at 199 in their 39th over. Scoreboard
