Royal Household - Saturday 10th May 2003
A hat-trick by former international pace bowler Aaron Gale wasn’t enough to help a strong London New Zealand line-up over come a dogged Royal Household on Saturday, but the Kiwi club did manage their first win of the season on Sunday with an outstanding victory over Chenies and Latimer in the second match of the double-header weekend.
The Queen’s flag was flying high at Windsor Castle on Saturday, indicating Her Majesty was in residence at the time of the Kiwis’ visit. Certainly, her servants were in no mood to be rolled over by LNZ’s fiery pace attack, holding out for a draw after opener Michael Singleton’s unbeaten 114 had allowed LNZ to declare at 215/4 earlier in the day.
Singleton's carefully crafted innings, which included 14 fours, was blighted only by a missed chance when, on 49,he lofted a simple catch to deep backward square. The Queen's man fumbled the chance and the ball trickled over the rope to take Singleton to a well-deserved half century. He never looked back. An unbroken stand of 95 with Gale(35*) took the Kiwis to their tea-time declaration score.
Earlier, last season's top run scorer Dave Fanning had departed without paying his match and tea fees .In fairness, Fanning, who badly pulled a calf muscle in compiling two not out, probably needed the money for £115 cab fare (reduced to £75 after negotiation) around the M25 in search of treatment.
Captain and Match Manager Mike Stead had the luxury of introducing Gale as first change after speedsters Sam (1-37) and Sean Martin (0-10) had softened up the Queen’s men with blistering opening spells. Gale, the former Otago and New Zealand ODI representative, didn’t disappoint - a beautifully - disguised slower ball for an LBW was followed by two inch-perfect in-duckers than cannoned into the stumps for the hat-trick. Royal Household gave up any thought of a run-chase and batted well not to lose any further wickets in securing the draw. The opening bat, Smith made an undefeated 45, as did the number six Summerhays.
LNZ's best chance of a late wicket came, amazingly, when Stead threw down the stumps from mid-off as Smith and Summerhays foolishly took on his arm. Umpire Conway adjudged that Smith had made his ground, much to the disbelief of Stead.
