Ripley - 20th July 2003

LNZCC took the unprecedented move of carrying a squad of 12 to this, the longest serving fixture of the club. This statistic was however not recognised until the batting order was finalised during the opening over. Club journalist, antagonist and No11 Steve Deane, having contemplated retirement of the game earlier in the week due to a mini cab driver taking off with his newly acquired kit, the previous kit having also being neglected, announced his superfluous requirements and trekked back to London after a top up pint.

Cambridge scholar Richard Dellabarca and Pete Tippen took to track offering a flat but green surface and a lightening out field. They were meet with a fiery attach and a chirpy slip cordon that dropped its first chance in the first over. Tippen received numerous blows to the body and offered a few agricultural ones himself in a gutsy knock of 37. Stalwart Richard Keyse (22) joined Isaac Southall (19) to steady the side to lunch at 72-2. Though out for 23, Dellabarca took on the umpiring cloak and proceeded to keep Ripley in the game. Two decisions of LBW, one against the day's captain left LNZCC struggling at 6-160. Sam Foley with over 300 runs for the club, soon fell for a well-compiled 31. Out of retirement and committee commitments, John McMullan joined Iron Gloves Richard Fish in a fine stand 40 just when Ripley's Auzzie leggie import, looked to wrap the side up. Fish fell for 27. Having faced 55 overs, sporting time was running out, but there was just enough time for the clubs newest father and tail end extraordinaire Philip Bartle to cover drove his first delivery for 4. McMullan had compiled a necessary 9. LNZCC dec 213-8.

Dave Morgan, was given the brief to ball fast and short and didn't disappoint, claiming 2 quick wickets to leave Ripley 2- 32 at tea.

Prawn sandwiches, quiche, and tart were presented at tea that was extended due to appetite. Morgan suffered most as his compact run up lost it's timing and received tap to the square leg boundary. Ripley required four an over, a relatively simple task on a lightening outfield. Into the wind Bartle caused the ball to wobble and broke two threatening partnerships after tea to leave Ripley 120-4 and the game in the balance. Brett Radford produced an over that went for 17 to tip the favour towards the hosts. Radford however came back from a shaky start to claim 2 vital wickets.

Keyse grabbed a wicket but was disappointed to Morgan dropped catch, having scooped up 3 essential catches in the outfield previously. Southall, having used all the subtlety of  Kees Mews, flexed every known muscle to man in order to gain the captains attention. Once given the nod, claimed his first wicket for the club with his first delivery. The second delivery found an edge and saw Iron Gloves, dive, levitate, juggle and drop. Ripley capitulated to being all out for 164. LNZCC claimed its fourth successive victory, with 8 bowlers sharing in the success in defending a modest total.
