Lashings CC - 25th August 2003
London New Zealand gave the star-studded Lashings a brief scare before falling to the 39-run defeat at Sutton Valance. Kiwi captain Aaron Gale won the toss and elected to put the hosts in to bat on a track that “was as flat as the M25” and the 500-strong crowd were treated to a veritable run-fest.
Lashings, boasting nine Test cricketers, amassed 341-6 off their 40 overs and LNZCC cashed in on some buffet bowling to respond with 302. The Lashings total was based around the contributions of openers Sherwin Campbell (74) and Grant Flower (99). Campbell went Gale as the West Indian sought to up the already impressive run-rate even further. But the Test scalp brought a muted response from the Southern man–“Already got him in 1995,” said Windy.
And records back him up. In a tour match in Dunedin the bloke with the long run-up got Campbell lbw for a second ball duck. The bowlers from the Care Home end had the benefit of a stiff breeze to aid them but Ryan Edwards and Sean Martin had to struggle into it at the other end.
Flower coasted to 99, but his inevitable century was denied by a diving catch at square leg by Sam Foley off Martin’s bowling. Foley then turned wicket-taker to remove Stuart Carlisle (41) and Mark Waugh (23) as the expatriates battled back. But any thoughts of a collapse were quashed by Richie Richardson and Chris Harris. Richardson smashed two huge sixes in his 34 and Harris hit a rapid 55. Richardson was claimed by Sam Martin, while Edwards, bowling very quickly, had Harris smartly stumped by Shaun Perkinson. Chasing more than 8.5 runs an over LNZCC lost Michael Singleton early and despite useful contributions from former NZ opener Matthew Bell (39), Dave Fanning (17), Sam Foley (23) they were well behind the run-rate midway through their innings. But Perkinson and Richard ‘Babe Ruth’ Burgess sought to rectify the situation with some lusty blows. Burgess took a particular liking to the bowling of Waugh and he clubbed the former Aussie Test star for 21 off one over.
Cries of “You’re just bitter about the Bledisloe Cup” from Burgess prompted a bouncer from Waugh which was duly dispatched to the boundary. Burgess finally went for 46, but Perkinson kept up the tempo and reached 61 before he perished. With overs running out and the run-rate rapidly climbing, Vance Thompson attempted to play out for a draw(!) but was soon encouraged to forget about his average and attempt to hit the ball off the square.
He finished with 17, while Gale bludgeoned an unbeaten 30 as the Kiwis fought gallantly to the last. According to Steady in the chair Lashings were happy with the fixture and they may extend another invitation to the club next year.
