Chenies and Latimer - Sunday 11th May 2003

On Sunday, an outstanding bowling effort saw an LNZ side boasting six new players recover from being dismissed for 148 to beat Chenies and Latimer by 15 runs.

With the bat, Geoff O’Dwyer took full advantage of being dropped at slip first ball to score 51.

He was ably supported by man-of-the-match Garth Deck, who made an undefeated 30 batting at seven.

Captain for the day Sean Martin (13), batting 11, and Deck profited from two simple missed chances to post a vital last-wicket partnership of 29.

Martin led the attack with 3-28 and Deck (2-17) and Steve Deane (2-21) chimed in with as Chenies lost wickets regularly throughout the run chase. The pace in the wicket was evident as Martin's first two dismissals came courtesy of sharply taken slip catches by Darren O'Loughlin at first slip and then Deane, who'd fumbled an earlier chance, at second.

The dismissals were split by LNZ's other new ball bowler, the bearded Lancastrian Fletcher, who produced a fine delivery to uproot the off-stump of Chenies' Australian professional.

Deane and Deck then combined to send down a dozen maidens to increase the pressure on Chenies' middle order and Brett Radford picked up a vital wicket to reduce Chenies to 6/48 at tea. After tea, Chenies' two junior players (under 15) combined in a fine stand of 44 for the seventh wicket to get their side back in the match. Just when the match seemed to be slipping away from LNZ, Deck trapped his man in front and umpire Martin Conway had to withdraw his left hand from his warm pocket. It was middle stump!!!

Deane then lulled the other junior into lofting twice to mid-wicket in one over and the catch was duly taken by Andrew Hunt at the second time of asking. Martin came back on to clean up the tail, but Dutchman Haan Van Reem had different ideas as he blasted three sixes and two fours to take the visitors within sight of victory.

But when the Dutchman was the ninth man to go, edging Martin behind to keeper David Moon, the Kiwis were able close out a remarkable comeback courtesy of a neatly-worked relay-throw run out, which was entirely dissimilar to Chris Cairns' dismissal of Brian Lara at the last world cup. Umpire Conway was again astute in his judgment, his affirmative decision giving skipper Martin a victory that his tactical awareness and vision
(mainly in bowling me) fully deserved.
