Wanderers - Sunday 14th July 2002
Due to the Cricketer Cup being held at our original venue of Bradfield School
the match against the Wanderers was transferred to the very pleasant
surroundings of the Wimbledon Cricket Club opposite the slightly more hallowed
turf of the All England Lawn Tennis Club.
On a lovely sunny day (no, that is not a mistake) LNZ won the toss and put a
Wanderers side featuring a number of Kiwis (and sometime LNZ players) in to bat.
After losing up a couple of early wickets the Wanderers through the efforts of
Kiwis Scott McHardy and Carl Anderson began to look dominant and a large total
threatened however through the sterling efforts of Sam Martin
(3/69) who bowled seventeen unchanged overs in the heat and Aaron Gale (4/54)the
run rate was pegged back and key wickets captured.
With the declaration imminent Richard Holden was brought on to bowl and had
instant success clutching a very firmly struck drive and finishing with the
figures of 1/14.
The Wanderers then declared their innings closed at 211/8 leaving LNZ to
overhaul this total in an hour and a half plus 20 overs.
Matt Fanning (17) and Jonathan Tierney (34) got the innings off to a rollicking
start before Fanning was out. Brief cameos followed from Dave Fanning (19)
before the loss of quick wickets saw the wheels start to fall off the LNZ chase
however a partnership of 49 between Richard Keyse (16) and Michael Singleton
(32) restored some hope.
Further quick wickets seemed to have put the chase beyond LNZCC's reach however
seemingly unfazed by this, Aaron Gale (31) and Steve Lester (28) then added 60
for the 9th wicket before Lester was dismissed after some lusty hitting. This
left LNZ needing 18 to win and Wanderers one wicket in the final two overs
despite the valiant efforts of Gale no runs were added in the penultimate over
and it fell to Richard Holden to see off the last over to be bowled by
Canterbury left arm spinner Anderson. A feat that fellow spinner Holden
accomplished with ease bordering on arrogance as experience triumphed over
youth!
Although, in a game that ebbed and flowed constantly, Wanderers probably
controlled larger chunks of the game than LNZ , a draw was a reasonably fair
result at the end of the day. It was a game that was played in an excellent and
competitive spirit and contained some very good cricket from both sides.
Judging from the comments of both sides as a number of drinks were enjoyed
afterwards on the balcony during a very pleasant evening next year's game will
be looked forward to with much anticipation.
PS - Also very pleasing to see the form displayed by the players from the
Mainland - be warned the North!
