Royal Household Saturday - Saturday May 11th

It was a keenly awaited occasion the return of one of our prize fixtures, the Royal Household played in the grounds of Windsor Castle. The setting was magnificent as expected and LNZCC were inserted into bat on a cloudy day with intermittent patches of sunshine. It was a typical English May pitch, playing very slowly but fortunately with consistent bounce.

Darren O'Loughlin and Dave Fanning opened the batting and got off to a brisk start, Lockie who was looking in good nick was dismissed 4 runs shy of the century partnership for 26. Richard Burgess joined the fray and the tempo continued, Dave hitting one shot well into the car park and Burg matching with a lovely shot over long on. Fanning reached his 100 with a six off the Daniel Vettori look-alike off spinner and promptly retired. An old timer Richard Palmer came to the wicket and a partnership of 20 odd was broken when Burg who was looking in ominous form was run out, no need for the third umpire with Eagle Eye Marty Conway doing the honours. There followed a rash of quick wickets with Messrs Martin and Singleton failing to trouble the scorers and Steady chiming in with a quick fire 17. Tricky Keyse was left not out with Richard Palmer and the declaration was called at 221/5. Was this too generous? Probably not we thought at the time.

What followed was a lavish afternoon tea, with "Adder" Singleton showing much more speed between the tables than he's even showing between the wickets. Date slice, assortments of cakes and sandwiches made it a tea to remember.

Big Philip Bartle and Vancer "I never bowl on the leg side" Thompson opened up, Phil was not quite his usual radar self but Vancer bowled a lovely spell, hitting the spot and got the first breakthrough leaving the Royal Household 30/1. A very good spell followed by Sean Martin who bowled 6 overs for 11 runs. However the runs continued to flow as the "Royals" reached the 100 and then 150 mark with only the loss of one wicket, two very stiff chances went down and their batsmen were well and truly set. Richard Holden tried his full repertoire and could not manage the breakthrough, Tricky and Adder bowled tidy spells but couldn't stop the flow. Finally when The Royals were within 10 runs of victory, Sean Martin caught his second catch of the innings. It proved too little too late though as LNZCC took a sound beating.

One thing to remember for next year. Pints in the clubroom were only 1.60, that's right change from a fiver for 3 pints. This momentous occasion led Burg to gush about numerous other places where he has had cheap pints.
