Hagley - Sunday 23rd June 2002

As our handbook says, this is LNZCC’s most stately fixture in the most picturesque of settings, worth every mile of motorway. Well the day could have been worth another 100 miles (if not runs) , and it was certainly my most memorable occasion with LNZCC through the 12 years I’ve been around.

Our patron, Lord Cobham’s hospitality this year surpassed his usual amazing free silver service lunch, as he invited us into his home. And so we were wined and dined amongst the regal splendour of centuries past; a magnificent occasion. The Hagley sprint ( a trophy won by the slowest man over  5 x 10 yard sprints) was resurrected as Fishy stood up and challenged TP over the desert. Unfortunately directly after lunch he subsequently won the trophy, as TP convincingly beat him to the tape (at the same time adding another hammy to his artificial knees).  We were also very lucky to have one of the club members Gordon Harcourt arrange to film the day for the Holmes show back in New Zealand…thanks Gordon. Thanks also to Rodger Finlay who put the side together, but unfortunately in the end had to be overseas.

Onto the match:  I had already won the toss and put them into Bat when I realised that after 12 years with LNZCC it was Pat Hounsell's’ last match for the club, and so handed the reigns to him. Hagley batted for 58 overs (but we didn’t bowl them out either) There was however some good economical bowling from Pat, Steve Lester and our visiting overseas player Don Hudson, all who got wickets. Their skipper apologised for delaying the declaration, but then he had the difficult situation of not having enough runs on the board (204) and probably being concerned about our batting…(as were we in the end)

We had 35 overs to get the 205 required for victory, and we should have got them with the line up we had. We were well on the way with a good 74 from The Don, and Pat was looking good, when caught up in the chase for 33. But we slowed up too much mid order when quick runs were required. Somehow though with 6 overs to go we had managed to get to a position where only 17 runs were required. However, 5 overs later we still had 6 runs to get with no wickets in hand. So it was with 1 ball left, 5 runs to get, TP and Tuffers had shut up shop well….and ran a single??

Match drawn, we should have won, but who cares……what a great day! one for the memory banks if not the scorebook.
