AfterMartinConwayhadarrivedearlyattheoriginalscheduled1130hoursstarttime(duetoabreakdowninfieldcommunications),scaledtheperimeterfenceandcheckedtheenemytroopshadnotsetupanysophisticatedformofambush,theremainderoftheLNZCCfootsoldiersdutifullyobeyedtheircommandingofficerandarrivedpromptlyat1245hourstodobattlewiththeHonoraryArtilleryClub.
BefittingthevenueandduetoHACbeingacoupleofmendownitwasdecidedthattherathervulgarpracticeofatossofcoinwouldbedispensedwithonthisoccasionandHACwouldbatfirstonatrackthatprovedcapableofdoingabitandanoutfieldwithmoretrenchesthantheSommethankstoanintensivesummerofWorldCupfunctions.
HACweresoonbeatingahastyretreatagainstthelessthanfriendlyfireofAaronGalewhotookthefirstwicketstofall.AlthoughHACrecoveredslightlytheyendedupbeingdismissedfor122inthe34thoverwithAaronGalebeingdeprivedofhiscareeraspirationof"appearingintheclubhandbook"strandedashewason4/22offelevenverygoodovers(stillthere'sNthvSththisweekend-easypickingsIsuspect).ThemainculpritsforthisdeprivationbeingScottMcHardywhofinishedwe3/4off2.1overs,RichardKeyse(1/33)andPeterTippen(1/29).
TheotherhighlightoftheHACinningswasShaunPerkinson'sfinegloveworkwithtwogoodstumpingsandathirdexcellentpieceofworkbeingdenied-perhapsonthatoccasiontheblurofhisglovesmayhaveevenbeenabitquickforMarty!!
Afteraveryenjoyableteatakenamidstwingbackedchairs,convertedbassdrumsastablesandtheobligatoryartilleryshellvasesthechasewascompletedinatouchoveranhourthankstoabelligerentinningsof89*fromMcHardywherehesubjectedtheboundariestoatouchofliveshellingpractice.HewassupportedinitiallybyDaveMcMillan(9)inafiftyrunopeningstandandthenaccompaniedtothefinishlinebyGregCollinge's(27*).
Needlesstosaythismid-lateafternoonfinishallowedampleopportunitytoenjoyafewpintsintheArtilleryArmswiththeoppositionafterwards.Anenjoyableconclusiontoanenjoyable(andsuccessful)dayforLNZCC.Itwouldbefairtosaythedebacleofacoupleofyearsagoisconfinedtothebattlefieldsofthepast,notabadthingeither!
