Goodwood - Sunday, 18th August 2002 On a hot and humid day the Captain strode to the wicket for the toss. He wore his 'tossing blazer' made famous in the late 80's with notable feats of 'bat first until 5.30'. However, despite the blazer miraculously still fitting, we LOST the toss. Goodwood inserted us with the Captain and newcomer David MacMillan (North candidate) opening up against a hostile attack. With dogged defence we got to 57 before the loss of Macmillan for a debut 41. The brothers Deane (Michael and Steve) were soon together. They accelerated the scoring while compiling 73 and 38 respectively. The old pros, Penman and Dietrich guided us smoothly to a declaration total. Penman scored an elegant 34 n.o., still failing to have a Club average !! The tossing blazer reappeared calling the players in for an early declaration (or would Benaud call it a Closure --- who cares Richie !!!!!!!) 251 for 5 declared of 55overs. The gentle sea breeze forced our strike bowlers Gale and Thompson to alternate in short bursts up the hill. The downhill chore was eagerly accepted by Vice Captain Byers. Knowing this ground as intimately as his own foreskin, he soon struck. - a gentle 'sea breeze drifter' accounted for the opener, 32 for 1. Byers task was two pronged -- leak runs and take wickets. He did both, 11 overs, 1 for 74. The pitch, as always, was very flat and slow. The batting was equally unenterprising. Despite these impediments Gale and Thompson bowled with real flare and great courage. Penman secured a very sharp catch in gully off the most controversial ball of the innings. Gale, in response to some severe stonewalling ,bowled a vicious 'throat ball' to the cream of British Airways pilot corps. It struck the splice and found Penman's hands low and to the right. Gale ended with 15 overs, 4 maidens, 3 for 25. Thompson (back off the long run) 14 overs ,4 maidens, 3 for 29. Dietrich and new boy, Steve Deane, took a wicket a piece. Try as we did we couldn't account for the evasive last dismissal. Goodwood finished the last 20 overs at 186 for 9 off 56 overs. A DRAW. Special mention to Richard Fish who kept wickets admirably. Facing a lively and pacey attack on a very uneven surface he conceded only 7 byes. He concentrated hard for the full 56 overs in oppressive heat. (Ed. Food for thought South selectors). Now I can hear the carping of ' why not try a limited overs format' . Quite simply , we would have won the match from the first over we bowled , what a hollow victory. As it was, we had a nail biter to the last ball TP bowled. I would also like to note the wonderful turn out of our ladies and the next generation. Six partners, seven babies and two Labradors. Finally warmest Club congratulations to the newest baby, Jack Barkle born last week. I hope I'm still playing when he pulls on his LNZ jumper.
