Four Elms - Sunday, 28th July 2002

The summer finally arrived at Four Elms. A 30 degree hazy heat with no wind greeted the players.

The opposition captain, whom won the toss, was kind enough to put his team into the field during the heat of the day.

The Fanning brothers, Dave and Matt opened the batting. With a fast outfield, the runs were soon piling on, with the 4 Elms bowlers finding the heat hard work and a rather docile pitch making it even harder.

Dave passed 50, and with a little look at the score book we realised that he had scored all his runs in 4s or 6s. A quite impressive effort. Matt meanwhile rode his luck before he finally fell for 17 out of an opening stand of 79.

This brought Andy Swann to the wicket. He and Dave took us through to lunch at 110 for 1.

Lunch was a wonderful BBQ, though the cooks looked well cooked themselves. Thanks to ladies of 4 Elms for their efforts on such a hot day.

Dave Fanning obviously enjoyed his lunch a bit too much, and was out soon after for 72, 68 in boundaries.

This brought Richard Burgess to the wicket. A quick fire partnership developed before Swany finally succumbed for 22.

Not to be outdone by Dave, Burg carried on with a wonderful innings. With a few more singles and a few more 6s than Dave, Richard raced passed 50. He was now ably support by Gordon Harcourt and they put on 75 before Burg was caught behind also for 75.

There followed a mini collapse with Gordon failing in the next over for 21 followed by Pete Tippen for 1.

This brought Shaun Perkinson to the wicket. He quickly got into his stride and was soon peppering the boundaries. The only relief to the 4 Elms bowlers was the holey fence which allowed them to rest a bit.

The innings was brought to a close on 249 for 6 (off 40 overs) with Shaun on 34 and Sean Martin on a quiet 1.

This left 4 Elms 2 hours + 20 overs to score 250; in the end we bowled 51 overs.

With Sean Martin and Chris Lee opening the bowling, hopes were high in the camp. The 2 openers stuck well to their task and frustrated the bowlers. It took the 1st and 2nd change bowlers, Gordon and Pete to remove both openers. Some good batting and some indifferent kiwi fielding in the heat meant that 4 Elms got to 120 with only 3 downs with time to spare.

Then the man of the moment Richard Holden, came into is own. He had 2 wickets and a catch (on the 3rd attempt) to remove the middle order. LNZCC were confident of victory but again some stubborn batting and some difficult chances dropped conspired against us and in the end 4 Elms reached 193-8 to earn a hard fought draw.

The bowlers had all worked very hard in the heat. Chris Lee and Sean Martin both bowled well but without luck for a brace of wickets each. Gordon Harcourt and Pete bowled tidily for their wickets. Richard Holden bowled well and deserved his 2 wickets.

A great day out was had by all and many thanks to 4 elms for hosting us for since the 1960's, but an old adage that has been around a lot longer was the name of the game:

'Catches win matches'
