Datchet Sunday 30th June 2002 Datchet is a lovely small, enclosed ground close to London, situated just near Windsor. It was a good addition to our fixtures list last year, with a match featuring their overseas professional NZ cricketer of the year 2000 – Mark Richardson, along with a few other international kiwis one of which is still playing for us – Aaron Gale. It was a very competitive match which we won. This year was expected to be another close and very competitive one, but surprisingly in the end it turned out to be like the World Cup Final we’d been invited to watch in their clubrooms…a bit one sided. They never really seemed to take the game to us…maybe a few too many hangovers? I had lost the toss, but luckily still ended up with my preference to bowl at them first. It ended up being a good tight bowling display (excluding The Don), with Steve TC Lester particularly beguiling the batsman, with (3 – 13). New recruit Sean O’Donnell also bowled well (4–49) and was unlucky not to finish with 5 wickets. At one stage we had almost finished them off pretty early, having them reeling at 90 for 7. One batsman however carried them through to a more respectable 161. Also, apart from a few lapses, we fielded very well, including The Claw reminding us how he might have got the nickname, with a ridiculously good ‘one fingered’ overhead catch. Thanks to ‘The Sheriff ‘ for stepping in for the unfortunate (no spikes!) Archie of the Wanderers, who seriously injured his knee in the field early on. We then shared the runs around, reaching the required 162 with 5 wickets in hand. A consummate all round victory. I have a feeling it might be a little harder next year.
