Wiltshire Queries - Saturday 26th May 2001
Although the Bank Holiday tour had been called off due to the lack of a Sunday fixture - try telling Dave Fanning and the Broughtons that this game was just another fixture and would not require travel of epic proportions.
Although the game had been rescheduled to a 1.30pm start to accommodate LNZ's inability to be punctual we still couldn't make it on time (except Phil B & Jonathon Coleman who were already on "tour" out West). After a 3 1/2 trip the West London members made it to the ground at about 2.00pm closely followed by Ryan.
We then agreed a 40 over game with a 2.30 kick off and got underway in spectacular fashion (albeit with an amount of borrowed gear) with Scott McHardy attempting to put his first ball into orbit - fortunately when it re-entered the stratosphere it found one of the senior Queries members who was probably still cursing our lateness as he spilled it.
This theme continued with Scott searching out most of the boundaries while things were rather pedestrian at the other end. The only minor interruption being the arrival of the gear with Dave - some 41/2 hours after leaving Blackheath. We lost our first wicket at 80 - of which I had contributed a measerly (& exceedingly tedious) 16.
Despite the presence of that acclaimed statistician Bill Frindall in the Queries line up, Jonathon & Andy Swann did not feel the need to ask to him to produce a run chart! Although in fairness to Dr Coleman he was asked to add his skills to a dislocated Queries finger shortly thereafter.
On 78 Scott finally got a sniff of the sandwiches and fearing they would be gone repeated his initial shot but this time was determined to find one of those impediments to batting in this game - a teenager - who made no mistake.
Dave (42 - runs not age) and Nick Broughton (47) then added 95 for the 6th wicket with some excellent cricket and very solid hitting from Nick in particular taking us to 227/5 off our 40 overs.
In an extremely un-LNZCC performance our bowlers then bowled almost exclusively on one side of the wicket (the right side !!) and no catches were dropped. Ryan and Steve picking up three apiece, Graham Dietrichs two and Mike Broughton and Philip Bartle one each as we dismissed Queries for 111 in 35 overs.
This left enough time for a couple of quick beers during which I think we all wished we were on tour as we turned our minds to the return trip to London!
All in all an excellent day's cricket which was probably a lot better than the score may otherwise suggest.
For future reference with regard to fixtures we have agreed to make the game an earlier start and to make a big effort to break our duck and arrive before kick off!!
Scoreboard LNZ 227-5 (40 Overs) Wiltshire Queries 111 (35 Overs) All Out LNZ wind by 116 Runs
